DRIFCan Car Donors | Funding Diabetes Research

One of the best testaments to exceptional donor care is repeat donors. One High River, Alberta family has donated five (5!) vehicles for DRIFCan since 2021! What keeps them coming back?

DRIFCan vehicle donors keep research rolling

DYK? There are over 450 million people worldwide who live with a form of Diabetes. “The mission of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation Canada (DRIFCan) is to directly fund cure-based diabetes research conducted by Dr.James Shapiro and the team at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada.”

This is a mission car donors can get behind! We have a family 100% committed to this cause. Since 2021 they have donated their own mini-family-fleet of vehicles for this work. That has resulted in thousands of dollars for Diabetes research!

The vehicles they gifted and the difference it made

Back in 2021, this generous prairie family reached out to donate their first vehicle — a 1990 Honda Accord. “It is an old manual Honda,” they noted, “but was used to commute 126k almost daily until the other day it died. We had it towed home and it started and ran for a bit and then died again. It will probably need recycling. We have just learned to deal with what doesn’t work. Sometimes the windows get stuck and sometimes the fuel gauge doesn’t work.” A character car all the way!

2022 rolled in, and with it, the family’s 2002 Chevy Tracker. Their second vehicle donation for DRIFCan. Then, a 2003 Toyota Sienna in 2023! “We have removed the battery but it was in driving condition and being used. The cable to one of the side doors was cut because the door would not close and now just has to remain closed but there is a wind leak. We think there might be an electrical problem because something was draining the battery if it sat for a few days. We had to guess on the odometer because we had already removed the battery.” A trusty minivan, making a difference at the end of its road.

And more vehicles were to come!

Here we are in 2024, and this generous High River family just keeps on giving! They first came to us in February of this year with their 2002 Dodge Caravan. It was ready for recycling and our agent served them in typical hop-to-it fashion! Then, just last month we saw them in our inbox yet again!

“The car runs fine but the battery has been removed. The right, passenger window will not roll up and down and needs to be fixed. It is permanently set in the closed position. The car was just not needed anymore. The kms is a guess because it is electronic and there is no battery so we can’t check it.” No problem! That 1997 Lincoln Town Car was another valuable recycle-ready vehicle for Diabetes Research!
