We love donated cars, and we really love it when kindness rolls in on four (or two…or eighteen) wheels! Practical compassion — the sort of kindness that shows up in helpful ways like shelter, food, and clothing — often needs a chariot to ride in on. For Meals on Wheels that’s just a regular day at the office!
Wheelin’ meals across Canada with Meals on Wheels
There are five Meals on Wheels charities currently set up to receive vehicle donations through our program. That is just a drop in the meal delivery car gas tank! From big cities to small towns, meal delivery is a significant component of caring for seniors and other vulnerable persons in Canada.
Calgary‘s charity notes,
“We are a not-for-profit organization that promotes health and independence to all Calgarians in need of affordable, nutritious meals. Whether it’s navigating life with a new baby, an unexpected or chronic illness, living with a disability, the loss of a loved one, divorce or simply the natural effects of aging, CMW is here to provide the comfort of healthy, delicious meals.”
Halifax writes, “Halifax Meals on Wheels has been delivering fresh, nutritious meals for over half a century. Dedicated volunteers put food on the tables of those in Halifax who are unable to prepare a meal for themselves. We deliver fresh chilled meals and warm hearts while providing peace of mind for our clients and their families.”
And the Oakville, Ontario MOW enables independent living by providing equitable access to nutritious meals and opportunities for social interaction while ensuring physical and emotional well-being.
Meals on Wheels Fredericton, and Sackville-Bedford Meals on Wheels would echo much of the above!
Meals on Wheels does (not) need your car!
These charities exist to foster independent living, health and nutrition, and a sense of community. Are you a bit confused about where your vehicle donation might go when donating to your local Meals on Wheels efforts? The charity does not actually need your car. The programs meal delivery is primarily handled by volunteer drivers who generously use their own vehicles.
What the charities DO need are the net proceeds that result from the re-sale or recycling of your donated van, car, truck, SUV, or motorcycle. Each donated vehicle is assessed on its own merits. Wherever possible, our agents will re-sell a car in an effort to see the highest return possible for charities like Meals on Wheels.
