April: a basket full of everything Easter to Earth Day

What does your Easter weekend have you tuckin’ into? This might be all about family…avoiding them, or enjoying their company in quantity! Perhaps you’re equal parts floppy ears and floppy slippers? This might be a weekend of honouring deeply held religious practices. It could be a scrabble for hidden bunnies and eggs, offering permission to dive into the chocolate like it’s your full-time job!

The month honours the Easter holiday in so many ways. What we aren’t as familiar with as the many other causes and cares represented early in Spring. I happen to be writing this on National Cat Lady Day, for example! Here are just a few of the “awareness” markers recognized this month:

When Spring is in the air

There’s something about this time of year that invites fresh starts and boundless possibility. For some faith traditions, Easter is a reminder of hope. For the commercial world, it’s certainly an opportunity to splash a whole lot of everything-is-gonna-be-okay pastel from wall to wall!

If you’re feeling the pull of warmer air and softer earth, you might even be getting the bug to scrub out the corners. Clearing out the closets and sweeping out the garage feel a bit more do-able right around this time of year.

Keep your local charities in mind as you free-up your own living space? Your local critter shelters may be just the right spot for your old blankets and sheets. Clothing donations can be a real boon for charities supporting women in crisis. Thinking of putting in a garden this Spring? Plant an extra row! Give that produce to your foodbank or food shed.

Let’s face it. Sometimes life can be so incredibly hard. One day you wake up with the world at your fingertips. Then you get dealt a blow — one you think only happens to others.

That’s exactly what happened to one of our generous donors. Life was good, business was great and then – Boom. A scheduled trip to the doctor turned into a diagnosis of prostate cancer. The story grows from there.

No excuses | Mercedes donor knows about regular checks!

We all know that we should get our annual exams – female or male. Yet, so often we pass them off as unnecessary. No big deal! That’s where we can start to slide the slippery slope of irresponsibility, right? We would never choose that word for ourselves, but our donor has a message about exactly that.

The day he was diagnosed he’d almost blown off his dreaded annual appointment. He decided he’d better go. Frighteningly, he was sent for further testing. The doctor said it was probably nothing, but it needed to be checked. Again, his natural reaction was to slough it off and try to get out of it. He realized that he was using his busy-ness as an excuse, though. Furthermore, he knew it was a small price to pay in the form of his time, to ensure his future would be bright.

What a sucker punch to hear the ‘C’ word on the other side of the check up. The good news? Early detection meant his survival was pretty certain. Thankfully, that has proven to be the case!

In his words, it’s a stupid disease for a man to die from because it is very treatable if caught early. Men just don’t want to talk about it. It’s embarrassing and degrading so the misconceptions around it are perpetuated instead of being dealt with. Sure, the process can be harsh but the alternative isn’t pretty either.

Inspired by a scary diagnosis, he opted to make a difference for Prostate Cancer Canada

Our donor wants to up the ante in awareness so men feel compelled to look after themselves. It’s important to him that they get their exams done.

So, he’s come up with a pretty stellar plan to do just that! His journey has inspired him to make a substantial donation to help others in the same situation. His greatest goal, going forward, is to bring awareness about this disease, and to help others realize the importance of early detection.

How is he underscoring his message? What is his extraordinarily generous plan? He’s donating a Mercedes!

This isn’t just any ol’ Benz.  It is a V12, 500 HP powerhouse that will give any Lamborghini driver a run for his money! The pristine Mercedes Benz S-Series will be auctioned off to the highest bidder on June 21st at Regal Auctions in Calgary, all proceeds going directly to Prostate Cancer Canada.

The ripple effects of giving big

The vehicle donation generosity does not stop there! More than 40 other donated vehicles will be selling on the same day, and each sale will benefit a charity chosen by the vehicle donor.  The kindness of Canadians is over the top as these donations will be a significant contribution to the hundreds of thousands of dollars being sent to charities nationwide via Donate a Car Canada.

Donated vehicles that are re-sale ready are put up for bids. The highest bidder takes the wheels! Sold as-is, the net proceeds from the sale are disbursed to the donor’s charity of choice. Our Mercedes Benz donor will be on pins and needles awaiting the successful sale of his beauty of a car for Prostate Cancer Canada!

Kids Cancer Care Foundation receives 5 vehicle donation — from one donor!

When a donor found herself settling an Alberta estate this summer, she needed a simple solution for managing multiple vehicles left on her loved one’s property. One by one, we excitedly watched as each unique donation rolled in on behalf of her charity of choice, Kids Cancer Care.

When the agent successfully completed her first free tow, she wrote in to note, “Very good service.” The second wave of vehicles were helped along by a, “Very nice young man,” too!

All-in-all, KCC will receive the net proceeds from her generously donated estate 1992 Buick Regal, 1984 Chevrolet Geo Citation, 1981 Oldsmobile Tornado (she had a “tear in her eye” as she watched this one roll away), 1981 Ford F-250, and 1980 Ford Econoline. These add up to thousands of donation dollars for her charity of choice!

KCC | A story about Rafi

This is Rafi.

When he was three, he was diagnosed with leukemia. After years of intense chemotherapy and invasive medical procedures, Rafi had finally conquered the disease. But the battle was not over. Rafi was left with a permanent memory deficit that effects his ability to learn.

Where is Rafi now?

Now a strapping young lad of 18, Rafi has dreams of becoming an engineer. He was in his final year of high school last spring when the schools shut down due to COVID-19. The timing couldn’t have been worse. Rafi could see his dream slipping away.

How Canadians responded

Thankfully, people like you stepped up to help. Rafi was able to complete his grade-12 year with the help of a tutor through our online tutoring program. With hard work, regular tutoring and constant studying during the spring and summer months, Rafi was accepted into the Electronics Engineering Technology program at SAIT. And, with the help of a Derek Wandzura Memorial Scholarship, also made possible by generous donors like you, Rafi just started his first semester. He and his mother couldn’t be happier: “Now he will have so much confidence going to classes and exams. Your support is a big relief for Rafi and myself.”

There are so many children in Alberta like Rafi today. They are the little ones who can’t go to school because it’s just too risky for a child on cancer treatment. They are the adolescents who struggle academically because of cancer-related learning issues. World Cancer Day: a blend of heart, stats, and hope for the future

World Cancer Day strikes a chord. At the time of this writing I have many loved ones and family members facing their personal Cancer diagnoses head on. I’ve lost people to the disease just this year, and many others over my lifetime. Maybe that rings true for you, too?

The Canadian Cancer Society offers some clear-eyed statistics on just how Canada is affected by this kind of illness as a whole. Their pie charts are not for the faint-of-heart.

And there is now more hope for cure, recovery, and remission than ever before.

The Alberta Cancer Foundation notes, “The impact of a donation is far bigger than any statistic. Your donation and your kindness reaches all over…It touches our neighbours, our friends and our loved ones–those who face cancer today or later down the road.

Caring and cars come together for Cancer

Cancer research and care is cause of choice for hundreds of Canadian vehicle donors.

This donation has been made in loving memory of this Donor’s late wife who had breast cancer and passed away last year. She was very grateful to the doctors, nurses and those who offered help and courage to her, especially, the nurses in Foothills Hospital. They’ve chosen to donate her car so that it may do a little bit help for others who are struggling with their diseases. They want to show their thankfulness and appreciation to those who helped, and keep the caring and love moving in our society.

Not long after we received this donation message, a Manitoba resident reached out. An ’05 Pontiac Grand Am had been abandoned on their property. Could they donate it to the Canadian Cancer Society? A few T’s crossed and a couple of i’s dotted later, and Yes! A free tow was in place for the property owner and a donation on its way to the CCS!

BC Cancer charity donor says it all

One Pontiac donor wrote in to say,

I definitely found the donation of my car experience to be very positive

and I am already recommending it to others. The process was very efficient

and quick. The Online form was easy to understand and complete and upon

submitting it, I received an email response very quickly, which clearly

outlined the process.

She then says,

Within a day or two, I received a call from your Agent, a very pleasant

man, who said the tow truck driver would phone me the following morning. As

promised, I received the call the next morning and was given a time frame

for that afternoon that my car would be picked up. The tow truck driver

arrived in a timely manner, was friendly and polite and although it was

license plates for me, hooked my car up, took care of the paperwork and

drove off with my car in tow.

Why would I donate my car for cancer?

Friends, how many of us have been closely affected by some form of cancer? Perhaps you have faced into a diagnosis yourself? Most certainly someone you love has gone toe-to-toe with one form of this disease or another.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society,

“Researchers estimated that there would be 233,900 new cancer cases and 85,100 cancer deaths in Canada in 2022. (The number of estimated new cases does not include non-melanoma skin cancer cases.)

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada and is responsible for 28.2% of all deaths.”

The reasons we give

Charity choice can feel like a really big decision when donating a car! How can we possibly choose one of over 1,000 charities? We give where we live. Hope. suffering, and sickness impact this choice. Legacy and estate giving can be a meaningful way to honour our loved ones.

The Alberta Cancer Foundation (Tom Baker Cancer Centre) was the heartwork of one September donor.

The giver’s ’09 Mazda Tribute was recycle-ready,

“This has been a great vehicle but recently we have had issues with it not starting randomly then it starts fine. It’s a 2009 so it’s just not worth us putting the time and money into it.”

Capably served by our regional tow agent, the free tow was arranged within a few days. The donor wrote in to say,

“The experience…has been extremely professional and easy. It was actually hard to let go of our family vehicle but when we saw we could donate of the the cancer foundation and specifically the Tom Baker it was an easy decision as I lost my brother to cancer in 2019 and donating in his memory means a lot…thank you for making the experience so easy with dealing with all your kind staff, including the…tow staff.”

The Goodness of Canadians in giving…even when they’re hurting. Giving with the intention of offering hope and practical help to others who will come after them. One little Mazda is a meaningful donation!

The facts

Every day, 27 Canadians are diagnosed with a brain tumour. Here are more facts:

• 55,000 Canadians are surviving with a brain tumour.
• There are over 120 different types of brain tumours.
• In the first year after diagnosis, the average patient will make 52 visits to their health care team. This could include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, blood work etc.

What is a brain tumour

• A brain tumour is a growth of abnormal cells that are either within or around the structure of the brain.
• Non-malignant tumours account for almost 2/3 of all primary brain tumours.
• The most common type of primary malignant brain tumour is glioblastoma. Moreover, average survival, even with treatment, is less than one year.
• Metastatic brain tumours occur at some point in 20-40% of people with cancer. The incidence of metastatic brain tumours is increasing as cancer patients live longer.
• Brain tumours are the leading cause of solid cancer death in children under the age of 20. Further, they are the third leading cause of solid cancer death in young adults ages 20-39.
• Brain tumours are located at the control centre for thought, emotion, and movement. They dramatically affect an individual’s physical and cognitive abilities.
• Brain tumours in children are different from those in adults. 60% of children with brain tumours will survive, however, they are left with long-term side effects.
• Enhancing the quality of life for people with brain tumours requires access to specialty care. Moreover, they may require clinical trials, follow-up care, and rehabilitation.
• Accurate data helps researchers understand the disease and improve treatment. To this end, the Brain Tumour Registry of Canada was launched in May 2019.
