Some straight up facts

• There are about 10,000 children living with cancer in Canada today.
• Each year, about 1500 cases are diagnosed
• Because of significant advances in therapy, 78% of these children will survive 5 years or more, an increase of almost 46% since the early 1960s.
• More than 70 percent of children diagnosed with cancer become long-term survivors and the majority of them are considered cured. However, long-term effects of surviving the treatments for childhood cancer can affect these children’s futures.
• In the early 1950s, less than 10 percent of childhood cancer patients could be cured.
• Leukemias, tumors of the brain and nervous system, the lymphatic system, kidneys, bones and muscles are the most common childhood cancers.
• In Canada, childhood cancer remains responsible for more deaths from one year through adolescence than any other disease; more deaths than asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis and AIDS combined.
• About one in four children who are diagnosed with cancer will die of the disease.
• With a mortality rate of close to 25%, Canada loses tens of thousands of years of potential life each year to childhood cancer. In terms of potential life saved, childhood cancer rank second only to breast cancer.
• Childhood cancers differ from adult cancers. Adults are most affected by breast, lung, prostate, bowel and bladder cancers. Children are most affected by acute leukemia, tumours of the brain and nervous system, the lymphatic system, kidneys, bones and muscles.

Shandra’s Story

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. This one hits home for me as I’ve shared in a previous blog. I have a son who is a cancer survivor. He was diagnosed at 10 months, had surgery to remove a kidney at 11 months and started chemotherapy 2 days after his first Christmas. We spent that Christmas within the confines of hospital walls…and tubes…and sleeplessness.

The truth is we got the best possible outcome we could have in our situation. He’s 12 ½ years old, considered cured and has more energy than the rest of the household put together! Not everyone gets to experience that kind of story.

One thing I love about our story, though, is that it proves the importance and necessity of research. Ten years before he was diagnosed with a Wilm’s Tumour, the survival rate was somewhere around 10% for that type of childhood cancer. When he was in treatment the survival rate had advanced to 96%!! As a parent, you can imagine the gratefulness for anyone and everyone involved in the advancement of treatment and care to provide the kind of hope – and outcome – we had.

One Tesla Model X, one wish to help, and a charity of choice

It’s safe to say that our call staffer was not prepared for the jaw-dropping query coming their way. I mean, we never know what to expect when a prospective donor calls in. It may be a query about a trusty ol’ Honda, or a motorcycle that’s been parked for two years. “There’s a family of mice living in the engine compartment of my rusted out Dodge — can I still donate?” is not outside of the realm of possibility!

But a call in about a Tesla? That is something none of our little crew here at Donate a Car Canada expected on a toasty afternoon late in August!

You can bet we didn’t take that call lightly. Every car, truck, van, SUV, and motorcycle donation is special. Each donated vehicle means needed support for the donor’s chosen charity. And some, like this Model X, need us to be alert, attentive, and on point!

Our donor support person took the call and was careful to answer every question. They provided detailed guidance regarding our process. Next, of course, they got curious about who was to receive the donation proceeds!

How does a Tesla Model X translate into charity dollars?

Every donated vehicle is considered for re-sale first. We have clear (and long-learned) parameters for this decision. Is the car drivable? Does it have any collision damage? Rust? Are there actually mice living in the engine compartment?

If a unit comes to us in running condition with modest mileage we want to ensure it finds a new owner! Our agents across Canada know their stuff. Auctions and re-sale agents alike will promote and pitch our donated vehicles to regional buyers. They know their buyer bases well.

Donated vehicles are sold as-is to the highest bidder. In the case of this fabulous Model X? Buyers saw the value as soon as it rolled across the floor. The proof is in the bids and the final dollar outcome for the charity!

All you need to know to donate a car in BC

…is a quick read and a click of a button away! There are one or two special rules about that ICBC transfer form of yours, but our agents will make quick work of that for you.

Here are the quick steps:

1. Click or call (1-877-250-4904)
2. Fill in the information form (this is where you’ll pick your charity, too)
3. Take a call from the towing agent and let them tackle the ICBC Transfer details

Does it help my charity to donate a car in BC?

BC car, truck, SUV, van, and motorcycle donors raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity each year. Your four-wheeled wonder can make such a difference!

We may recycle your car: this results in a flat-rate donation determined by what our agent will pay for the vehicle. This can earn your charity hundreds of dollars.

Whenever we can, we have our agents re-sell donated vehicles. This ensures that the charity can receive a gift of thousands of dollars if the car has that kind of value.

About that ICBC Transfer Form

You will hear from us promptly after finishing up your donation form. Typically, we send an email within an hour, or two, on business days. We respond through the weekend as well! When you opt to donate a car in BC, you can expect things to move along at your pace.

After we have that form, the tow agent will call you or your tow contact to arrange tow timing. They will
– clarify current COVID measures.
– discuss the option to drop off your vehicle (if this is your preference).
– ask where you will leave the keys and original signed vehicle registration. Your signature on an ICBC Transfer Form will be required (our agent will advise regarding this process). In some cases, this means that the registered owner will need to be present at tow time. The agent will do all they can to make this as simple and efficient a process as possible!

2021 brought in some sturdy gifts for children’s hospitals, in particular. In fact, we even had a sailboat donation that brought in over $5,000.00 for the BC Children’s Hospital!

An ’05 Audi landed The Montreal Children’s Hospital a gift of over $2,000.00. A Honda Pilot that we thought might be recycle-ready sold for over $2,700.00 for the Stollery! Furthermore, Jim Pattison’s CHF, a Saskatchewan charity, was the pick of donors across all Western provinces.

Donating to your local hospital in this way is easy. A form takes less than 10 minutes to fill out. We can also take your information over the phone during business hours.

We are heart-and-soul a Canadian company. Moreover, you can choose any Canadian charity to accept your gift.

Donate a Car Canada’s does all of the leg work and accounting for your hospital. Our cheerful agents will either recycle or re-sell your vehicle. Then, your charity will receive the net proceeds of the sale!

How much really goes to my local foundation?

Not only that, your hospital charity of choice does not pay for this giving option. When you donate a car, all of the work is done for your foundation. They simply wait for the eTransfer to arrive at the end of each month!

Every car, truck, van, SUV, and motorcycle is reviewed on its own merits. There are fees involved on the processing end, of course. Our tow guys need to put gas in the tow truck tank.
