We raised $821.50 for the Canadian Red Cross when Jean donated her VW Tiguan. It was important to her that we know,

“A myriad of issues: Engine light is on – it’s apparently to do with the environmental filtering; the shocks have cracks in them, still work, but might need replacing soon; the airbag light has been on for a while; the clock spring appears to be broken – none of the steering electronics work, including the horn; there is significant rust forming on the driver’s side door; the windshield has a small chip/crack where a rock flew into it; the rear windshield wiper has broken off; given the valuation, the repairs would cost more than the car is worth.

IT CAN BE DRIVEN AT PRESENT, so long as the battery gets a jump. But with no working horn, I don’t think it is technically road-worthy. Note: I’m also donating the summer tires (which are in the backseat). The winter tires are on the car.”

“We would rather donate it than fix it.” 2014 Ford F-150 for the Down Syndrome Resource Foundation

“I want my donation to go to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society.” This 2010 Toyota Yaris donor’s charity choice was story in itself. They were the IRSSS’s first vehicle donor. Thanks to their gift we were able to add the charity to our own drop-down list.

“I was in the process of rebuilding it as it is a vintage vehicle. The engine turns over beautifully and all the parts are there.” This donor’s 1958 Cadillac Seville was auctioned for the Action Coalition on Human Trafficking Alberta Association.

A Suzuki Grand Vitara donor for Habitat for Humanity donor noted, “Very happy to have helped.” And help she did! Her vehicle was auctioned for a $2030.87 donation!

Long(er) and full-of-heart donor stories

“Dear Donate a Car Canada:
The towing gentleman was wonderful!! Very understanding and helpful. He
showed great consideration and care attaching her to the tow truck.
He also allowed my brother & I to say our goodbyes.

Then, a 2012 Hyundai Genesis Sedan wrote,

“The Genesis is in good condition. No mechanical issues, good visual condition, no rust showing.

As mentioned, the car has been sitting a while and battery is dead. It might start with a boost, but unlikely given the time.

I also include a complete set of snow tires on rims. Tires (Michelin) somewhat worn down, but still useful.

The tires currently on are all seasons and in great shape.

I maintained it very well over the years. There are no mechanical issues, and there is no rust. It has just been sitting for a while. It just needs another battery if it does not boost.

I would certainly hope that it can be sold at auction.”

And sold at auction it was! The donation outcome? A whopping $5357.90 for the Canadian Institute for Advancements in Mental Health!

Donating cars serves donor, community, and caring causes

There are a number of questions that folx ask when considering donating cars:

How fast can you get here?

Is my vehicle acceptable?

How much is my tax receipt?

Well, first, our transport agents will get to you lickity-split! Many donors express surprise at how quickly and efficiently they receive their free tow. On the other hand, if you need some time, no problem! The agent will happily put things on pause until you are ready to proceed.

Second, yes! Recycle-ready vehicles make great donations! Some of our supporting agents do require that there be four tires in place. These don’t need to be in great shape — even spares will do just fine. The agents simply need to be able to roll things to the yard in a safe and cost effective manner. Of course, if there are missing parts, the scrap donation outcome may be reduced as agents determine value, in part, based on curb weight.

We either re-sell, or recycle, vehicles. Here’s more on that…

More about how your tax receipt is determined

1) If your vehicle is selected for our recycle process, the donation amount for a vehicle can be between $30.00 – $800.00. This is dependent on the area in which it is donated, and what the market will pay for the year/make/model. The vehicle will be picked up by our towing agent at no cost to you.

2) Your vehicle may be considered for sale at auction. Several factors go into qualifying a vehicle for auction. These include, but are not limited to, drivability, type of mechanical problems (if any), age, damage, visual appearance, and mileage.

Vehicles sold at auction are sold ‘as is’ and ‘unreserved’. They are sold to the highest bidder, as a full and final sale. Outcome at auction varies. As such, we cannot guarantee a specific sale result. That said, it is no unusual to see thousands of dollars sent to charities of choice when donating cars and auction sales align!

3) Our third option applies to vehicles that may not perform well at auction, but that are not ready for recycling. Our re-sale/recycle process will see our agent pick up your vehicle for free.

Once they have it on their yard they will assess it to determine if it should be re-sold or recycled. This will be based on the current market. If they see re-sale value in your vehicle, they will advertise it to their own buyer base, selling it as-is, to the highest bidder. They will send us the net proceeds from the re-sale price. If they determine that they will not find interested buyers, they will recycle your car.

Our experience tells us that we do not always see Blue/Black book value when we employ the re-sale process. That said, if you explore our social media posts you’ll see that we routinely see vehicles sell for thousands of dollars in donation returns for the donors’ charities!

The less visible benefits of donating cars

Donating cars benefits charities, to be sure. Every coin counts and your vehicle donation really piles up those coins! A tidy-sum tax receipt is always a bonus at tax time, too. But there are benefits the go beyond the bank, as well!

Environmental impact is one such bonus. Safe and clean vehicle removal declutters yards and neighbourhoods. Furthermore, proper disposal of fluids and parts ensures responsible Earth care.

Donate a Car Canada is Canadian through-and-through. We understand that building and sustaining business within your community is important. One of the ways we keep our own cost of business low is by partnering with your local auction yards, re-sale agents, and scrap yards. So, donating cars here keeps as much business local as is economically responsible.

‘Have your feet under you and feeling some financial freedom? Canadian charities will put your dollars and cents to excellent work. Caring, skilled men, women, and children are manning the wheel at our charities. What they need more than anything? The finances to keep things in motion. Your financial offering can make such a difference.

On the other hand, some charities will accept gifts-in-kind — that lightly used couch, coat, or pair of shoes will help!

Get Intentional

Give where you feel the love! CanadaHelps is a fabulous resource in selecting charities to support.

The cause that has most-helped you or your loved ones may be just the place to start this Giving Tuesday. If vulnerable pets or our remarkable Canadian wildlife tug at your heartstrings, give them a paw (or talon…or fin) up!

In giving creatively, you might even think about the impact your gift has on more than one level. Giving your lightly used household items, or a vehicle, means practical help to the recipient. That kind of giving does more! It reduces waste and is helpful environmentally. It clears your own space (possibly aiding in your own wellbeing). The benefits touch into your life, the life (lives) of your recipient, and the broader world.

All about your free tow (Or, Why you’ll love our agents!)

Have you had a minute to hang out on our socials? Pop ’round to Face Book or Instagram. It’s all there. One review after another after another after another! Vehicle donors love our free-tow agents, and Angelo is one of the very best!

Many of our recycle and re-sale agents have been working alongside us for over 10 years. In every province, through rain, sleet, hail, and snow, they keep right on truckin’. They’ve hauled motorized wheelchairs and motorhomes; they strap on motorcycles and hot rods. And they really do tow everything in between!

Furthermore, they do it cheerfully — with such good humour, compassion, and care!

They get it. Understanding that donating your vehicle is a serious endeavor, they treat it seriously. They appreciate that letting a vehicle go can be emotional (sometimes that emotion is relief; sometimes it feels surprisingly sad).

Taking time out to photograph a donor with their beloved donation is pretty commonplace out there in the wilds of donation! This is the kind of service Angelo has provided, year in and year out.

A tip of our hat

We have grown to respect and love this outstanding transport agent. Angelo has been the man on the truck for Everclear Metal Recycling in BC for decades. You read that right: Decades!

We’ve lost track of our first encounter with him, but he has been serving BC vehicle donors with kindness, reliability, and flexibility for years. Donors love him. Like, they really really dig this guy.

Now, after hitting a milestone birthday, Angelo is hanging up the tow hook. It seems like a fitting time to honour the care and commitment he’s shown the hundreds of Canadians he’s worked with as they supported their chosen charities.

Angelo’s service from the truck has rippled out to impact several hundred Canadian charities and (no exaggeration!) hundreds and hundreds of Canadian donors. Here are just a few of their comments:

L.O., a Dodge Ram donor for The Whole Dyslexic Society wrote, “Thank you!!! It was a really emotional day and Angelo – the tow driver – was so sweet. I warned him that I might cry and he said he’s been through it 100’s of times. Then he started making jokes like he’s always the “bad guy” so we got laughing. He was so calm and understanding. And he did this for us on a Sunday! We were going out to Langley for a family reunion and I thought doing this with family around who know the history and meaningfulness of that vehicle would really help and it was no problem at all for him to meet us on a Sunday. Knowledge Network Corporation Chevy S10 donor, K.S., was excited to answer our check in queries, “Did you receive a call from our tow agent in a timely and cheerful manner?”

Yes- in fact ANGELO from Everclear Metal Recycling called promptly. opened with a joke, gave me all of the information.

“Were you happy with the tow service?” ABSOLUTELY- Again, ANGELO from EVERCLEAR METAL RECYCLING told me the process, called to confirm the time, called when he was 5 minutes away, and then chatted with me while he worked. He was charming in the best way possible- from the heart. The 2000 Chevy S10 had been my husband’s truck and he passed away from cancer. So seeing the truck go made me sad. Angelo somehow knows that even old vehicles have stories, and often meaning to their owners. The world needs more Angelos!!!!

When W.N. donated their Hyundai Sonata for Diabetes Canada they noted, “All around the experience with your program was excellent. Angelo, the tow agent couldn’t have been more , pleasant. He was courteous and friendly. If there is a word better than excellent that is how I describe Angelo.“

A ’95 Chevy Lumina donor for a children’s charity stated simply, “This experience was quick and painless. Thank you for making it so easy. Finely tuned machine! The tow agent was friendly, prompt and very cheerful. Thanks for the great service!”

A content Toyota Tercel donor for Covenant House Vancouver said, “I received a phone call from Angelo. He was very cheerful and gave me lots of notice about the day/time he would come and take the car. The night before, he called again to confirm that he was coming, and we had a nice chat when he loaded the car onto the back of his truck. It only took about 15 minutes for the entire visit, again, faster than I’d expected.”

Angelo has received so many of these gently positive notes over the years.

He brings a famous Martin Luther King quote to mind,

Angelo is a man with a unique set of skills who went about his everyday job with a whole lot of human kindness, good humour, and consistency. To say he did it “well” is an understatement. I don’t know about the “hosts of heaven,” but we have certainly heard a host of humans who have had nothing but praise for the guy holding the keys to hauling their donated four-wheeled gift.

‘Tis the season for lashing rain and pounding hail

As I sit down to put a few words on the page, a bossy storm has just blown through my Alberta town. What began as a gentle rain accompanied by a cooling breeze suddenly turned into a run-for-cover hail extravaganza!

From where I live, we often watch storms build menacingly just to the East of us. Well, they build over us, skirt us, and then move along to really blast the city East of us. From where we sit (by then under blue skies), we see billowing white storm shelfs bottomed with deep grey-blue threat. We can always see, miles and miles from the action, when the city is getting pounded by hail.

In recent years, these storms have resulted in millions of dollars of damage to homes and vehicles. My own family has experienced massive damage to a home and several family vehicles.
