One donor’s efforts to support Adopt-a-Dog/Save-a-Life

Before you read on to our previously posted story about a stellar one-time donation outcome for the compassionate work of Adopt-a-Dog/Save-a-Life:

In the last two years, one donor, has taken supporting this rescue into his own…er…paws. We first met G.M. in the summer of 2025 when he rolled into our program with a scrap-ready Honda Fit. Seeing how simple and quick the process was, he submitted a second vehicle just two hours later! His Toyota Matrix was quickly assigned to the same tow agent. His double donation for the dog rescue was underway!

Despite flat tires and rust damage, both vehicles were picked up (via free tow!) per G.M.’s timing request.

Single-handedly, this one donor raised almost $1000.00 for the charity that summer!

This spring he was back again! His Mazda 6 was proving to be more heartache than it was worth. A blown radiator and done-in transmission were the final straw. He opted to donate again. He chose Adopt-a-Dog for the third time!

Can we get a drum roll for this amazing donation?

Since we wrote about Adopt-a-Dog earlier this year, we’ve had an extraordinary donor story update: A 1997 Winnebago Adventurer donor donated an astounding $11,450.00 to Adopt-a-Dog/Save-a-Life this November!

How they get it done

Adopt-a-dog/Save-a-life is a Canadian charity dedicated to saving abandoned dogs and placing them in loving, caring homes. They do not have a physical shelter. Their dogs are all cared for by dedicated volunteer foster parents.

The charity has a no kill policy. They encourage all animal shelters and rescues to incorporate policies that would have all dogs spayed and neutered before they are put up for adoption.

Their success stories will re-boot your COVID-weary heart!

Adopt-a-dog/Save-a-life Fostering

AAD/SAL’s rescue work is dependent on dog fostering. Curious about what that involves? Here’s an invitation into this work:

“Have you ever wanted to do something that really made a difference? Giving a homeless dog a temporary home changes the life of that dog forever. The stories of their lives can be heart-wrenching, but you can help to give them a happy ending. In order for us to save lives and find homes, we need your help. We could not rescue dogs without our dedicated foster parents.

We do not expect our foster parents to be dog experts or dog trainers. That said, we do want people who love and care about the welfare of dogs. Some of our foster parents have never owned a dog but they are comfortable with dogs and want to help a dog in need. We recommend you have some hands-on experience with dogs. A certain level of confidence is necessary when bringing a dog into your home.

Our adoptions take place mainly in the Toronto area. For this reason we find it easiest to work with foster homes in the GTA. We do make exceptions and are willing to speak with individuals who live an hour or so outside of Toronto. If you do live outside of the downtown area you must have a car and be willing to pick up the dog and supplies. For those of you who live further away please consider contacting a rescue in your area.

We supply everything you may need; you just supply the warm home and the love!”

I can’t home a dog – How can I help?

Hosting a fund raiser is always a win! AAD/SAL operates on donations, so getting the word out and raising dollars helps.

Dog taxi service is always in demand! If you’re in the GTA, become a driver for fostered dogs who need a lift to their next vet appointment!

Donation dollars have the most direct impact, of course. Cash is tight for many of us. In that case, donating your old vehicle serves well. Moreover, car/truck donation serves you, the charity, your local economy, and the environment.

Nothing says it better than a multi-vehicle hospice donor

It is not unusual, having had a gratifying, efficient, and generous donation experience, for donors to come back again and again. One Alberta social services company is an example of the satisfaction of donating many vehicles over time.

When the support services entity originally found us, they had four (4!) company vehicles to donate. They gifted an entire fleet of five Dodge Caravans over a four month period.

Although it was a fleet, each minivan was assessed on its own merit. Some were re-sale ready; some needed to come off the road. Donations ranging from $500.00 to $716.12 were raised for each one!

With over 80,000 Canadian charities to choose from, the agency could have selected anyone to gift. Their charity of choice? Pilgrims Hospice Society was the grateful recipient!

But wait! They weren’t done giving, yet!

As we speak, we are working on yet another grief support donation from this social services crew! Hospice Calgary Society will be receiving their proceeds from this week’s minivan donation shortly.

Supporting experts in grief companioning

While grief is common to us all, offering grief support is something special indeed. Death care and the depth of creativity, compassion, and good humour practiced by staff and volunteers in these spaces is laudable.

When the donating “how” matters as much as the “why”

When a donor calls or writes in ready to donate their vehicle, they usually have a very clear Why. They are donating because they care. That caring comes in all shapes: love for critters and passion for health causes; concern for community and love of the arts; faith and hope for the future.

It’s important that every donor’s reason for giving is met with an efficient, personal, respectful process.

One Manitoban offered some reassuring words the other day. A hearty reminder of why this stuff matters so much!

“Hi! Just wanted to let you know that the tow company arrived as scheduled (the operator was pleasant and accommodating), and I cancelled my insurance on it the next day.
 
After almost 19 years of driving my Vibe to commute back and forth to work almost 100kms per day during the week and travelling through some very nasty prairie weather (all of which that car got me through safely and reliably), it was sad to ‘her go’ but it was just time to say goodbye.  With it being a stick (manual transmission), there just wasn’t anyone interested in buying it from me.

So, I turned to making it into a donation and hope that in that way it will have some value to CancerCare Manitoba because we are all affected by this disease in one way or another.

I had originally thought to donate it to (another vehicle donation program) but searching for that site landed me on the Donate A Car Canada website which had so many other worthy organizations from which to choose, it was a bit of a struggle to decide on which one!  I’m confident that CancerCare is the best decision.
 
Lastly, thank you.  I found the Donate A Car Canada website to be a very straight forward and easy process!  The emails and the telephone calls I received were all very informative and very pleasant, putting me at ease with making the donation.   I would definitely recommend this process to anyone wishing to dispose of an old/aging vehicle.”

One of the ways we keep our overhead (very!) low is by operating as an on-line entity. We rely on word-of-mouth and internet searching for our donations. This ensures that we’re not investing dollars into marketing that could be going directly to our hundreds of receiving charities.

One of my favourite traditions with my Mom is going to K-Days in Edmonton. We’ve done it for 21 years now, with the exception of maybe one or two when I was having babies. We enjoy a leisurely lunch while we watch the thoroughbred races at Northlands Park. We spend the whole afternoon laughing and enjoying each other’s company. She bets, I post them for her, we have our little routines. Then we wander through the exhibits, buy fudge and mini donuts. We stay at a hotel because we both come from other places. They are memories I will treasure as long as I live.

What does going to the Exhibition have to do with Mother’s Day? Well, those memories contribute to the embodiment of who my Mom is, and when it comes to celebrating her, those moments mean something. When I think of her, there is no thing I can do, nor words to fully express my gratitude for all she represents to me. When Mother’s Day comes around, I fall so short in acknowledging her but then, maybe demonstrating my love and appreciation is something I should do more of all year through and not just leave it for one day out of the entire year! This year she’s going to be in Cow Town with me (a rare treat), and we get to enjoy an Elvis impersonation dinner theatre. Can’t wait! After all, Elvis was always her first love!! 🙂

Memory lane and Mother’s Day

I read an article this week that took me down memory lane and it offered a great idea for making Mom’s day special. One dad bought a journal and has his little girl write/draw a card in it every year instead of buying one. How sweet is that? I like that dad! Thoughtful, all I’d need to draw a tear or two! Isn’t that a great idea?

There are so many creative things we can do without spending a ton of money. Breakfast in bed – the old standby. A hand-made coupon book filled with ‘gifts’ of time, chores done, good attitudes, no sibling fights for a day… Flowers of course, family. Surprises.

Mom’s Day and Donate a Car Canada

All of us working at Donate A Car Canada are moms [This was the case when this was originally posted back in 2014 — we’ve had a few shuffles in staff since then!]. We all have lots of stuff. I think I can safely speak for all of us when I say that we don’t need more stuff. We want more meaning. If you really wanted to do something meaningful for Mom, you could ask what her favourite charity is and make a donation on her behalf. Maybe it’s MADD, maybe it’s Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, maybe it’s Inn from the Cold. When television entertains and inspires

Do you turn the TV on to tune out reality? Yeah. Me too. I love to get lost in all kinds of story telling — SciFi, murder mysteries, drama, sitcoms. If it’s done right, I’m in! Must Love Dogs (now streaming on CBC Gem) is a combination of drama, humour, and a purpose-filled call to action.

Sprinkled with a whole lot of adorability and good dose of animal justice, this is one show that might be a cozy watch on warm spring evenings.

Vehicle donations have being going to the dogs for 20 years around here. Because folx give where they care, animal shelters, SPCA charities, and humane societies are often selected as a vehicle donor’s charity of choice.

We know that vehicle donors must love dogs! Whether it’s one beloved Lumina, or multiple vehicles over time, vehicle donors give-give-give for critter care.

“It’s hard to give up the van (we are very sentimental about it), but my husband and I are so happy that the funds can be donated to Funds for Furry Friends. Because we adopt senior dogs and of our fur babies came from them, we know they are a wonderful group who foster dogs in home settings.”

Digging in the dirt

You know that February feeling: your whole body and brain start wishing for (aching for?) sun, for warmth. You just want to get outside. I start sticking my fingers in the back garden dirt somewhere around the beginning of March. Is the ground thawed yet? Is it now? How about now?

We start watching for signs that the world around is shifting from winter freeze to blossom and greenery and light. And then that day comes. The earth has warmed enough that winter’s deadfall can be raked from the yard. The gardens are ready for a little loosening of soil. It’s too soon to plant, but not to soon to prepare.

Beyond the backyard

There’s a bit of the mystical in the turning of this season. Tackling some home and vehicle maintenance projects. Working the earth. Cleaning out corners. It’s not a leap to start thinking about some of life’s deeper questions. We might begin to see things more clearly — in brighter colors. Even the things we typically keep tucked away internally.

This is where we start to think about what we’re really hoping for from life. We think differently about relationships (maybe even feel a little Twitterpated?). We might feel a bit more adventurous and begin to consider travelling further afield. Spring has the potential for wonderment.

Taking time for Spring

This season, just when I’d typically gear up — energized by newness and planting and scrubbing — I’m practicing slowing down. Seeing. Looking closely at the soil and the rocks that I love so much. Acknowledging the miraculous-science of every green sprout. Especially the hardy little peeps that are already braving air above earth. Being grateful for the garage that needs power washing. Making space in cluttered cupboards. And making space in a cluttered mind.

There’s no formula to this. No self-help book. ‘Just a little bit of practicing: what do I see? Right now. In front of me. My son? Maybe the Goodness that he carries so comfortably? I might notice that the swallows did their first fly-by yesterday. They’re just checking to see if we still have rooms for rent this year. We sure do! I could be reminded that we haven’t had sickness in our home for long months, and that when difficulties do come, we have friends close-by. Or I could take a moment for poetry?

New life straight ahead

Here’s to Spring bringing vibrancy and hope into your (no doubt!) busy and sometimes beleaguered days. For what it’s worth, internet stranger, you have permission to take deep, deep breaths. To pause. Come awake to whatever version of beauty you have right in front of you. To engage with that newness. Maybe even enjoy it all?

Signs of Spring are everywhere. Between a few little cold snaps, I’ve spotted gophers, flies, motorcyclists, and the ultimate sign: our first robin!

Rabbits and streetsweepers

As I sit (on the deck…in the sunshine) rambling on, a street sweeper is taking his initial swipe at our gravel-strewn street. The family of wild rabbits that makes their home under the neighbors’ deck is scampering wildly around the yard. And the neighbor’s dog is going nuts over those same bunnies.

The mama skunk that has been prowling the hood (I tracked her for miles in the freshly fallen snow the other day) has happily claimed pretty much everyone’s front porch in her mafia-like landgrab. Who’s going to argue with her? She and I had an encounter on our walking path just the other day. There’s only one way in and one way out of this particular stretch of green space. I was attempting to make my way out. She wanted in. I froze. She froze. And we both, wordlessly and simultaneously, gave each other a very wide berth.

Signs of spring…in the garage

Just about now we all start feeling a little Marie Kondo need to find some joy-through-purging, scrubbing, and expunging. I’ve gone through closets and cupboards and basement corners. How we accumulate so.much.stuff in such little time I do not know. But we do. And every year it’s gotta’ go.

The garage is always the last place to get any attention, right? In fact, it’s the spot I purge everything out into! The floor is caked in everything from mud to salt to some reluctant-to-go ice. There are tires for multiple vehicles, bins full of goodness-knows-what, and a “work bench” where zero work occurs, and lots of work-ish bits and bobs build up.

Get that clunker out of the way

If maneuvering around a project car is making the garage clean-up crazy-making, consider donating? Many of us have tired old vehicles just taking up space in the garage, or on the driveway. We had good intentions to fix ’em, but is it worth it? We’ve hem’d and haw’d, weighing the cost of fixing against the value of the vehicle. If it’s costing you more to keep it, it may be that its re-sale or recycle value would be more meaningful to your charity of choice than the sentimental value of the car to you?

Whatever the signs of spring in your back yard or garage, some warm sun and the beginnings of green and growing things are sure to give us all a boost in the month ahead. Here’s to a successful clean up, and lots of time to enjoy the wake-up weeks of the world around us.

National Volunteer Week

If you have dollars to give, hooboy does your charity of choice ever need them now. Please give. But if finding two cents to rub together is the joke of the day? Share of yourself in a different way. This coming week, charities across Canada are honouring humans that help! Volunteer Canada notes, “Participating, contributing and volunteering helps to create connections, community and belonging.”

Canadian charities function in no small part because of the folks who believe in, and give their time to, them. Around here we have the happy luck of seeing the effects of this across the country. As April has unfolded we have seen hundreds of charity posts spreading gratitude for their volunteers.

Folks like you and I are at-the-ready to fix, haul, create, sort, drive, cook, sing, or slop out a horse stall. We clean riverbanks and transport wildlife. Some babysit and others run whole summer camps. We offer compassionate care in cancer clinics and diabetes classes. Some bravely champion human rights.

The Mayo Clinic gives us some clues about why this kind of caring keeps us coming back for more:

1. Volunteering improves physical and mental health.

2. It provides a sense of purpose and teaches valuable skills.

3. And it can nurture new and existing relationships.

Looking for a place to start your own volunteer experience?

Our little team here loves working alongside vehicle donors. Our business serves Canada-wide in this one specific way. In our down time we find places to give back by supporting the causes we personally love, too. For me, this comes in a couple of different shapes. For example, I sing in a “memory choir”. This unique non-profit is set up to match volunteers with folks living with memory loss in the form of dementia or Alzheimer’s. The science says that when we sing in community it’s super duper good for brain health and mental wellbeing. I have to admit, I joined the choir to volunteer for the sake of others, but the benefits for me have been unquantifiable!

What happens when I donate a vehicle?

First, we have live humans answering an actual phone line every day (1-877-250-4904)! That noted, many folks call in whilst in the middle of the important decision: Should they sell a vehicle privately? Should they donate it for the charity they love?

A beautiful extension of the Donate a Car Canada program is that when you donate your unused, unwanted vehicle, you can choose ANY Canadian charity to gift. The net proceeds from the re-sale/recycling of your car, truck, van, SUV, or motorcycle goes directly to the charity.

There are zero costs or tasks left to the charity. We manage all aspects of the donation process. CanadaHelps manages the actual receipting process. This allows your chosen cause to continue doing the work they’re missioned with — no distractions!

Your free tow

Within hours of completing your donation form, one of our agents will call you to arrange free pick up of your vehicle. They’ll assist with everything from proper registration paperwork and transfer of ownership to the care and keeping of your property when they come for the vehicle.

That tax receipt

Once your vehicle is picked up and re-sold or recycled, it’s just a matter of accounting completion. You will be kept apprised of where things are at in your process all along the way, including letting you know when your gift has actually been disbursed to your charity of choice. The receipt will arrive to your inbox shortly thereafter. You’ll receive a link for accessing copies of the tax receipt if your original is somehow misplaced, too. When re-selling a vehicle through auction or via another bidding process, agents simply do not see Blue/Black Book values. This is often because the sales reflect what the precise current market will support.

There are some fees incurred in the running of the business end of things. Donate a Car Canada is a business that serves from coast to coast. We keep our costs low through several key means: our team is lean, and we all work from home. Because we are an online service, our running supplies are also minimal. That said, we do have employees (the reason you can talk to a funny and fabulous human when you call in, and you’ll get a personal note when you email).

Our agents cannot afford to donate their truck, fuel, and staff costs. Some of the value of the vehicle will need to go to the agent providing service. The cost of business for ourselves and for our agents are a factor in the donation outcome.

Simplifying life one vehicle at a time
