These and many other emotions are often voiced to our donor care team when a vehicle with sentimental value is donated. It’s no surprise that when a vehicle has been part of the family for many years it can be a bit of a process to let it go. It usually carries with it the hope that someone else will have similar attachment to it, or see the value that it brings because of the memories and service it has provided.

Sometimes the thought of recycling a vehicle with that kind of attachment to it is difficult. So, we’re grateful we have the option to auction vehicles to extend their life!

Turning that summer vacation ride into riches for charity

Have you ever wondered what happens to your summer vacation shuttle bus once its driven its last carriage full of tourists through the Rockies? One BC company makes it a habit of extending the legacy of those trusty vehicles.

The company owner first came to Donate a Car Canada in 2022. His 2010 Ford E450 Bus had been rendered immovable thanks to a stolen catalytic converter. $500.00 was raised for the Regional Animal Protection Society.

Then, in 2023, he donated a scrap-ready 2014 Ford E450 shuttle bus. It too had, you guessed it, a stolen catalytic converter. RAPS received $275.00 dollars to help the critters.

Most recently, this same donor rolled back in with a double donation in January! You read that right: two shuttle vehicles in one month. The happy news? These ones weren’t quite ready to come off the road. Auction-ready and fully of potential, his 2015 Ford E-450 was sold for a donation of $2866.15 for the BC SPCA! It’s parking lot pal, a 2011 Mercedes Benz Sprinter, went for a $1109.02 donation for the same charity!

The example set by this summer vacation shuttle owner is inspiring! Every vehicle counts — junker and jewel alike. Ask the care teams at RAPS and the BC SPCA: big donation, or small, when it comes to helping vulnerable animals, every gift matters.

‘Tis the season for lashing rain and pounding hail

As I sit down to put a few words on the page, a bossy storm has just blown through my Alberta town. What began as a gentle rain accompanied by a cooling breeze suddenly turned into a run-for-cover hail extravaganza!

From where I live, we often watch storms build menacingly just to the East of us. Well, they build over us, skirt us, and then move along to really blast the city East of us. From where we sit (by then under blue skies), we see billowing white storm shelfs bottomed with deep grey-blue threat. We can always see, miles and miles from the action, when the city is getting pounded by hail.

In recent years, these storms have resulted in millions of dollars of damage to homes and vehicles. My own family has experienced massive damage to a home and several family vehicles.

Turn storm and hail frustration into cause for celebration!

Happily, hail damage to a vehicle is usually just cosmetic. That is, it’s more of a blow to the pride than it is to the drivability of whatever four-wheeled favourite is getting us from point A to point B. Insurance will likely cover the damage…if you don’t mind waiting in line for a few months to get the dimples banged out.

Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation and you

We first blogged about the ACHF back in 2016. We have had the joy of sharing in this children’s hospital heartwork for years! The car, truck, and van donations of folks like you have been building up for years!

Now? Nine years later and vehicle donors are still seeing their dollars add up…and up…and waaaaay up!

100+ years of Alberta Children’s Hospital Love

The ACH mission is just so big! In 2022, the hospital celebrated a big birthday:

“This year, the Alberta Children’s
Hospital turns 100 years old! It’s a huge
milestone – an opportunity to celebrate
a tremendous history of caring for
children and families, made possible by
our incredibly generous community.

From the start, the hospital set out to
provide the very best care possible
for children. First located in what was
originally a three-storey duplex in
southwest Calgary, the hospital moved
to a second building in lower Mount
Royal seven years later. In 1952, children
began receiving care at the third facility
on Richmond Road. Then, with more
than $50 million in donations from the
public, the current state-of-the-art ‘lego’
hospital opened in 2006 in the city’s
northwest…

The hospital has provided nation-leading
care for kids for decades. For example,
back in the 1950s during the polio
epidemic, children travelled from across
the country for leading-edge treatments
only available in Calgary. That innovation
continues today.”

Gratitude rolls in on 4 wheels

Through rough times and profitable times, car donors have been participating in the caring work at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. The ACH helps our Beloveds. We get that here at Donate a Car. Our own children and other family members have been helped in creative, patient, and courageous ways at the hospital. It’s easy to choose the children’s hospital as a receiving charity when we feel so very thankful for their care.

In the current market we see strong returns on even the scrappiest of scrap cars. $300.00 – $400.00 is ballpark for charities like the ACH when they have an end-of-life car, truck, or van donated on their behalf. We’re working on half a dozen such donations at the time of this writing!

Better yet? We love (love!) to see vehicles put up for re-sale. It is the norm to see a re-sold or auctioned vehicle bring in thousands of donation dollars for a children’s hospital charity!

The Alberta Children’s Hospital shouts out

Just last Fall, the ACH wrote,

“We are updating our Wall of Honour at the Alberta Children’s Hospital and I am pleased to let you know that, thanks to your continued support, Donate a Car is now being recognized in the Guardians category ($250,000 – $499,999) as Donate a Car Canada. During these challenging times, we are extra grateful for the support of community members like you.”

Dear donor, that’s You! You are the “community member” that is an agent of Goodness and hope and practical compassion. That old Camry may be just so much metal and rubber to you at this point. To the charity you love? It could be $100.00, or $800.00, or $13,000.00 giving dollars for a charity like the ACH.

Here’s to another century of grateful giving

These years partnering with children’s hospital donors feels good for our Giving Selves here at Donate a Car. We know that you don’t donate your car in order to get your name printed on a wall. And we don’t do what we do to receive accolades either. But there is a richness in seeing that our time in working alongside each other — you the giver, the hospital as your recipient, and us acting as go-betweens — has a cumulative effect.

The children’s hospital is committed to building their work! Their next 100 years? They have plans to continue personalize care for every child, and to bring that care closer to home. They will seek to empower the best and brightest minds in research. Investing in places and tools that advance child healthcare and research will be key to their work.

International Women’s Day | How investing in me changed everything

For most of our company’s existence we have been an all-women staff. Donate a Car Canada has a woman at the helm, and our core values ensure strength of community and empathetic donor care. Combine business savvy with kindness and you’ll accomplish so much good!

The foundations of our program create space for profound impact — by women and for women.

My own story has been strongly and broadly impacted by what can happen if you invest in women. Or, if you invest in just one woman.

I approached the work force with trepidation just over a decade ago. I’d been a stay home mom for almost twenty years by then. My choice to have children at a young age meant that I had never tackled post secondary schooling. Jobs had been intermittent and diverse. My priority was raising the kiddos; career came second.

Donate a Car Canada came to me as an off-handed recommendation. It was a work from home gig (long before that was commonplace) and the hours would be light. All I needed was a computer and the willingness to work. A short job interview with our sprightly, highly intelligent, and visionary boss and I was in! My life was about to change forever…

It’s never about just one gal!

Our boss absolutely took a chance in hiring me. While I’m a plucky thing with a wish to serve honestly and carefully, I came to Donate a Car with no formal administrative skills. I’d picked a few things up over years of home and community work, but I was verrrrrry green. The Boss wasn’t fussed for a minute. Training commenced…and here we are. Over 10 years later this company has invested in me again and again: bolstering me when I make errors, supporting me through life shifts and wobbles, and championing me in the things I love that are well outside of the company’s four walls.

This inclusion, investment, and ever-present support has plunked more than one brick into the foundation of my life.

I can draw a direct line between this job and finding the courage to go back to school.

There is a correlation between this work and how I have been with pursuing my own future.

If it wasn’t for this job, I would not have had the courage to start my own business. A business, it turns out, that is all about supporting women. Dozens of women. Women who, as they find their own courage, strength, and grounding go on to live their own lives in a supported way.

And so it goes.

Tend the heart, body, mind, community, soul of one woman and you will soon see an ever-widening ripple of creativity, sharing, support, financial grounding, and thriving community.

First, seek out charities that jive with you personally. ‘Committed to the arts and education? There are groups organized and working diligently to create opportunities and safety for women and girls. Perhaps human rights, equality, and food and housing security is what makes your blood pump. There are charities working very hard to make those basic rights a reality. Work toward ending sex/human trafficking, and domestic and gender-based violence is what’s stirring you to action. There are like-minded folks fighting for the end of these atrocities.

So, grab your phone, your laptop, your tablet and start exploring the wonderful world of Canadian charities! Begin with your charity’s Face Book or Instagram feed. The courage, persistence, and long-haul patience of people just like you is inspiring.

Honouring those who give this International Women’s Day

How I would love to splash the names of the many, many women who have affected my life all over this page. Teachers, nurses, doctors, financial advisors. Divorce mediators, spiritual directors, lawyers. And friends, friends, Friends. My life is a collection of the impacts made by so very many women. Women who have given of their time, skill, resources, humour, and good graces.

And in the vehicle donation world? We have the happy privilege of supporting hundreds of Canadian women in their generous efforts through donating their cars. They come to vehicle donation by way of struggle, caring, and, sometimes, convenience! Sometimes it’s as simple as clearing the driveway of an old junker. Often? Much, much more often? It’s about compassion and community.

Women donate their vehicles because they are moved to do so by love for their children, spouses, countless other loved ones, their critters, and the planet!

This International Women’s Day, we honour these women. Our wish? That they be met with the same attentive, intentional, faithful care and concern that they give away so freely.

And beyond our tiny little world of interconnecting, we would wish equality, inclusion, and safety for all women. For all women, in all lands. This IWD2025 we imagine a world free from domestic violence. Car Donation | Canada | Every province!

Some of us are not ready for our donated vehicles to be taken off the road. For one of our donors it was the sounds their ol’ Dodge van made. The engine’s hum let his dog know that his master was driving up onto the yard. That van made many trips to chemo. After beating Cancer not once, but twice, our donor had a sense of gratitude to those four wheels. The sturdy metal got him through some tough times. His van donation resulted in a gift to a charity that had walked alongside him right through it all. Kidney Cancer Canada was a happy recipient!

So, it’s personal…even emotional

Do you relate to our Dodge donor? When our cars are ready for their last trek, a drop-off at the scrap yard might not do. We want to see our trusty vehicle continue to serve someone, somehow. It may have become too costly or too cumbersome a thing for our own circumstance. Yet, we can’t bear to see it just get carted off without a little added dignity. We want to see it receive its due respect.

Honouring loved ones is another way of making a gift count. A Toronto donor didn’t beat around the bush, “Give it to Lung Cancer – the disease killed my wife.” These cryptic messages can be tough to read (our hearts break a little with every one), but they speak happy volumes when we’re able to send off a gift to the Lung Association after the successful processing of a Chrysler Intrepid sale! 

Who can benefit from car donation Canada-wide?

Any charity in Canada can receive a vehicle donation through our program. We tackle all of the work for them; your donation dollars go to the cause you care about. This is free for your charity, and free for you! Charities are not left processing cars or working on re-sale paperwork.

First, you donate your vehicle. Then, you wait for the phone to ring. Our agent will make free tow arrangements that suit you best. After that, you simply wait for your tax receipt. The charity? They simply wait for your gift to come in the mail.

So, for your part, the tow is free. Not only that, we will make all arrangements (for both recycling and re-sale) on your behalf. And for the charity, there is no time or money taken from their important work.

How much is my car donation tax receipt?

Donation outcomes vary from province to province, and even city to city. This is because all donated vehicles are assessed on their own merits. We have seen re-sale donation outcomes as high as $66,850.00! In some parts of Canada the scrap car donation outcome can feel a little lean. In some cities we see outcomes as high as $600.00 for a scrap-ready car!

Tax receipt amounts — the breakdown

Donate A Car Canada has three possible sale procedures that maximize the donation outcome for our charities. Here’s how we work:

1. Many donated cars are ready for the recycle process: This applies to vehicles that are ready to come off the road. The donation amount for each varies. Dollar outcomes depend on your donation location, and what the market will pay for the year/make/model. The vehicle will be picked up by our towing agent at no cost to you.
2. We always assess: is a vehicle suitable for sale at auction? Several factors go into qualifying a vehicle for auction. Drivability, mechanical condition, age, visual appearance, and mileage all impact this decision.
   Vehicles sold at auction are sold ‘as is’ and ‘unreserved’. Sales are to the highest bidder, as a full and final sale. Outcome at auction varies. As such, we cannot guarantee a specific sale result.
3. Our third option applies to vehicles that may not perform well at auction, but that are not ready for recycling. Our re-sale/recycle process begins with the free tow. Once our agent has it on their yard they will assess your vehicle to determine if it should be recycled or re-sold. This will be based on the current market. If they determine that they will not find interested buyers, they will recycle your car. If they see re-sale value in your vehicle, they will advertise it to their own buyer base. They will send us the net proceeds from the re-sale price.

Sometimes, a quick trip to the junkyard is all we’re looking for, but sometimes the thought of the scrapper being the next stop just doesn’t seem a fitting end for our faithful old vehicle. We are here to carefully tend your donated car, truck, van, SUV, or motorcycle. Like you, we want to see the highest return possible for your charity of choice. Donating a vehicle is a big decision. My own family has donated several vehicles through the years, and each decision is made carefully. The biggest conundrum? Which charity to choose! Inn From the Cold (a local family shelter) was a heart-choice for us…out of a list of so many other worthy works!

When selecting the charity you wish to donate to, you might start by thinking close to home. What is the care that is most affecting you and yours right now? Perhaps the concern of the moment is Canada’s wildlife, or conservation? We have charities for that! If health is top priority, there is a charity tending the very aspect of physical wellbeing that you would like to support.

The complicated thing about the Christmas month’s “spirit of the season” is that for many this is about just buckling down and getting through it all. We don’t mean to be fussed! But real life can put the squeeze on pretty tight. If our pockets are empty and we feel like we’ve been giving all year? The giving month can feel like it’s all pressure and little pleasure. It’s a time when we feel the sting of lost loved ones. And if we had warm memories from childhood it can feel like an endless chase to capture the sparkly feelings and whimsy that are just so elusive.

Make a difference for charity when downsizing

H.G. had a big life change in the works. Downsizing was a must. One of the arrangements to be made? Letting go of his Toyota RAV4.

“The horn doesn’t work, so the driver’s airbag may not work, and the cost quoted was around $1000 to repair it. the exterior looks really good, just a couple minor scratches. There is cosmetic damage to the driver’s door and the front passenger window doesn’t open…had the same problem with a rear window that was a cheap repair. It’s still my daily commuting vehicle, but I’m moving and keeping only my camper.”

Busted horns and a well-worn engine are our thing! Every car counts when it comes to charity, and H.G. had a plan: he wanted to donate his Toyota for The Salvation Army.
