We raised $821.50 for the Canadian Red Cross when Jean donated her VW Tiguan. It was important to her that we know,

“A myriad of issues: Engine light is on – it’s apparently to do with the environmental filtering; the shocks have cracks in them, still work, but might need replacing soon; the airbag light has been on for a while; the clock spring appears to be broken – none of the steering electronics work, including the horn; there is significant rust forming on the driver’s side door; the windshield has a small chip/crack where a rock flew into it; the rear windshield wiper has broken off; given the valuation, the repairs would cost more than the car is worth.

IT CAN BE DRIVEN AT PRESENT, so long as the battery gets a jump. But with no working horn, I don’t think it is technically road-worthy. Note: I’m also donating the summer tires (which are in the backseat). The winter tires are on the car.”

Short and to-the-point donor stories

“We would rather donate it than fix it.” 2014 Ford F-150 for the Down Syndrome Resource Foundation

“I want my donation to go to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society.” This 2010 Toyota Yaris donor’s charity choice was story in itself. They were the IRSSS’s first vehicle donor. Thanks to their gift we were able to add the charity to our own drop-down list.

“I was in the process of rebuilding it as it is a vintage vehicle. The engine turns over beautifully and all the parts are there.” This donor’s 1958 Cadillac Seville was auctioned for the Action Coalition on Human Trafficking Alberta Association.

A Suzuki Grand Vitara donor for Habitat for Humanity donor noted, “Very happy to have helped.” And help she did! Her vehicle was auctioned for a $2030.87 donation!

Long(er) and full-of-heart donor stories

“Dear Donate a Car Canada:
The towing gentleman was wonderful!! Very understanding and helpful. He
showed great consideration and care attaching her to the tow truck.
He also allowed my brother & I to say our goodbyes.
He understood my feelings of sadness of letting go of a vehicle which has
been an important part of my life.
Good vehicles are easy to find but when you find a great vehicle it becomes
a part of you. She was a member of my family.
He is a wonderful, thoughtful man. Please thank him for me.

Then, a 2012 Hyundai Genesis Sedan wrote,

“The Genesis is in good condition. No mechanical issues, good visual condition, no rust showing.

As mentioned, the car has been sitting a while and battery is dead. It might start with a boost, but unlikely given the time.

I also include a complete set of snow tires on rims. Tires (Michelin) somewhat worn down, but still useful.

The tires currently on are all seasons and in great shape.

I maintained it very well over the years. There are no mechanical issues, and there is no rust. It has just been sitting for a while. It just needs another battery if it does not boost.

I would certainly hope that it can be sold at auction.”

And sold at auction it was! The donation outcome? A whopping $5357.90 for the Canadian Institute for Advancements in Mental Health!

Donated Hyundai models raise thousands of dollars for charity

Just a few minutes ago I had the happy experience of engaging a Hyundai Tucson donor. Her trusty and beloved ol’ girl is ready to come off the road. The donor is having a hard time letting her go, but she’s excited to be donating to her charity of choice. In this case, she’s giving to a human rights organization.

We’re working on a Santa Fe donation for a hospital foundation, too. An Accent donation is going to Ronald McDonald House Charities this month end. The Canadian Red Cross will see the proceeds from a Sonata donation drive on up shortly, and an Elantra will benefit the ALS Society.

Every car counts!

Re-sale ready vehicles are a boon for charities coast to coast. Whenever possible, our cooperating agents re-sell donated vehicles to the highest bidder. Vehicles are sold as-is (no repairs are done on the vehicles prior to sale).

Your used vehicle (and you!) can become part of the solution

Have you had the experience of watching the news (aka: Doom Scrolling) and feeling overwhelmed? Sometimes all we need do is see a tragic headline and we feel overwhelmed. There is happy news! You can change that feeling of powerlessness into a sense of purpose!

J.S. discovered this when they donated their 2010 Nissan Sentra for the Alberta Cancer Foundation. As with every donated vehicle, their car was assessed. We determined that, despite its age and high mileage (almost 300,000 kms!), it was a good fit for auction. Buyers on sale day thought so too! Just like that, $2550.60 was raised for the ACF!

CancerCare Manitoba was also the happy recipient of an auction-ready car donation! M.B. donated his 2006 Chrysler 300. It sold for a whopping $1005.00 donation for the cancer charity!

Your car, your caring, your charity of choice

$1100.02 was raised for community services in Laurel’s town thanks to her 2002 Pontiac Sunfire donation!

$1306.70 was donated to a homeless shelter when Kerrie donated their Volvo.

James donated his 2009 Subaru and it was auctioned for $3781.95 for his faith-based charity of choice.

And we’re not done, yet!

The Ontario SPCA was recipient of a very unique “vehicle” donation. Dot donated her eBike. A donation of $734.65 was the generous result!

Lastly (for this story’s sake), G.W. donated their Honda Fit for the ALS Society — for a gift of $2215.90!

As you’ve guessed by now, these are just a handful of examples of the generous outcomes we see every month here at Donate a Car Canada.

Every day, in the news, sometimes on our own streets, we see unique and crisis-driven need that affected citizens are not necessarily equipped to handle alone. Relief and aid organizations like the Canadian Red Cross provide everything from international disaster relief following natural disasters to at-hand support right within our safe Canadian borders.

Those engaged in International Operations with the CRC may find themselves offering physical relief through food and fresh water, or emotional and psychological support after a personal devastation. Their “Finding Family-Restoring Family” efforts reunite families torn apart by emergency circumstance. Their human rights advocacy touches lives impacted by violence and bullying.

’66, ’68, ’72, ’89 | YYC car dealership making magic with four special numbers

Auction-ready and just so pretty! Jack Carter Chevrolet Buick GMC Ltd. is donating four absolute beauties on behalf of Canadian Red Cross wildfire appeals.

Soon to be up for sale at Regal Auctions in Calgary, Alberta (with helpful condition notes from the car dealership):

First on the list, a 1972 Chevrolet Cheyenne Super: “Restoration complete about 15 years ago – about 30,000 miles after restoration. Fully maintained and driveable. A binder with pics etc is available for reference. This vehicle has been fully restored and would do great at a vintage auction.”

Then, a 1989 Jaguar XJ12 makes the roster: “The XJ12 Cabriolet was reserved for only the wealthiest, discerning buyers and this is a good one. With only approx 40,000 original miles, it is in beautiful original condition and looks every bit the part a Jag should. Having just had and extensive service it is reliable and ready.”

Not to be outdone, a 1966 Ford T Bird: “Fully restored in 2014 with an appraisal done at that time. Really unique vehicle in great condition. Perfect for a vintage car collector. We will provide all documents and appraisal for you.”

And last, but certainly not least, a 1968 Suzuki Cobra T500: “Two stroke Bike, low km but may have been rolled over. we have some additional information to provide when we drop off the bike.”

Today’s refugees, tomorrow’s strength

“While every refugee’s story is different and their anguish personal, they all share a common thread of uncommon courage — the courage not only to survive, but to persevere and rebuild their shattered lives. ” ~ Antonio Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees ~

Unrest around the world reminds us that peacekeeping and global aide are a present and pressing need. Thousands of displaced people have fled from their family homes. They leaving extended family and familiarity far behind them. Displaced peoples are straining for safe and friendly borders.

Today’s news is a reminder of a time, not long ago, when other refugees sought safety en masse. The 70’s found the Vietnamese “boat people” looking for safe haven and renewed starts. It seems like just moments ago that Syrian refugees were headline news. 

Like these displaced peoples, Ukraine’s refugees will need some extra support for a time. But it won’t be long until they are lending a hand to others once again!

One refugee family pays it forward…BIGtime!

The Tran Family knows the plight of young families fleeing a dangerous and violent threat. They were on one of those boats that made its way from the shores of Vietnam in the 1970’s.

Fleeing on foot through the jungle, their infant girl in arms, they knew that the smallest sound would give away their position, putting their entire group of displaced villagers in peril. Everything they possessed was used as payment to secure passage out of Vietnam. 

For days and days they traveled by boat — hazarding harsh seas and doldrums, cramped conditions and desperation. Their first taste of safety was Hong Kong. There they were locked up until it was deemed that they were fit to travel, and shores further on ready to receive them. A church in Canada sponsored them, and they made their way to our peaceful land.

As fear and a complex economy shape our own views of the refugees that are seeking asylum here, now, consider the Tran’s contributions in the short few decades that they have called Canada home:

Mr. and Mrs. Tran have worked for the same two companies for 35 years, growing their young family within the safety of Canada’s borders.

Their infant daughter, upon whose silence everything depended in the jungle in Vietnam, is now a geophysicist.  Her younger sister also became a geophysicist, and the other married into the field.

Their son? He is an entrepreneur and a businessman improving his community through both business and community projects in real estate, and the music industry.

Refugees | Lending a Hand

Their reach? One of the many ways that the Tran family is building their country, and paying forward the hope that was offered them just one generation ago, was through a minivan donation. Their gift helped new asylum seekers with a donation of over $15,000.00 from a single vehicle sale!

Ukraine conflict gathering support here at home

Our socials are going to be acknowledging the war in Ukraine often in the weeks ahead. Many of our charities are doing what they can to lend aid. Some guidance from the Red Cross

The Canadian Red Cross has offered,

“Although the situation is evolving, what is clear is there has been a massive
escalation in hostilities. The humanitarian consequences of this crisis will be vast.
The Canadian Red Cross has been in close communication with the Ukrainian
Red Cross Society (URCS) and has contributed to their preparedness efforts.
These include personnel, equipment, and training.

Here’s how the Red Cross is responding:
• The URCS has 2,000 volunteers and 550 staff working across Ukraine. We know they will need our steadfast support in the days, weeks, and months ahead.
• The URCS is currently assisting those impacted with livelihoods support,
psychological support. They are also operating mobile health teams.
• Working alongside the URCS, the international Red Cross Movement is
responding to existing and growing humanitarian needs by delivering urgent
assistance, including food, fuel for heating, medical supplies, and support
for housing.

The Canadian Red Cross is supporting preparedness and response efforts. They
remain in close contact with Red Cross Movement partners on how to
best support those affected in Ukraine and surrounding countries.”
