So, why would I opt to sell a vehicle privately instead?

Dollars to donuts, if you sell a vehicle privately you may see a slightly stronger dollar amount than will be reflected in a vehicle donation tax receipt. There are few reasons for this:

When re-selling a vehicle through auction or via another bidding process, agents simply do not see Blue/Black Book values. This is often because the sales reflect what the precise current market will support.

There are some fees incurred in the running of the business end of things. Donate a Car Canada is a business that serves from coast to coast. We keep our costs low through several key means: our team is lean, and we all work from home. Because we are an online service, our running supplies are also minimal. That said, we do have employees (the reason you can talk to a funny and fabulous human when you call in, and you’ll get a personal note when you email).

Our agents cannot afford to donate their truck, fuel, and staff costs. Some of the value of the vehicle will need to go to the agent providing service. The cost of business for ourselves and for our agents are a factor in the donation outcome.

Simplifying life one vehicle at a time

If times are tight and pennies are pinched, the choice to sell a vehicle privately may be the route for you. But if there’s some wiggle room in the budget, donation may be the perfect service for you! One way of assessing that is considering how “full” your own bottle is. What does this have to do with me?

It has really only been in my lifetime that we have started talking openly about this aspect of our wellbeing. If you are a little older, you may well remember a time when feelings simply were not discussed. Maintaining composure and bottling things up were signs of strength. We have moved beyond that, now. There is a growing permission to name what is true for all of us: we are resilient; we are vulnerable.

Our emotional and processing health needs the same attention we might give a tummy ache, a broken leg, or a migraine. Minding our emotions and overall wellbeing is as important as taking care of our cardiovascular system.

In wobbly times like these, turning attention inward is important. We are learning to take care of our self — maybe with some of the same compassion we are quick to offer each other!

Donated Hyundai models raise thousands of dollars for charity

Just a few minutes ago I had the happy experience of engaging a Hyundai Tucson donor. Her trusty and beloved ol’ girl is ready to come off the road. The donor is having a hard time letting her go, but she’s excited to be donating to her charity of choice. In this case, she’s giving to a human rights organization.

We’re working on a Santa Fe donation for a hospital foundation, too. An Accent donation is going to Ronald McDonald House Charities this month end. The Canadian Red Cross will see the proceeds from a Sonata donation drive on up shortly, and an Elantra will benefit the ALS Society.

Every car counts!

Re-sale ready vehicles are a boon for charities coast to coast. Whenever possible, our cooperating agents re-sell donated vehicles to the highest bidder. Vehicles are sold as-is (no repairs are done on the vehicles prior to sale).

Streamlining the simple life one donor at a time

A 2006 Ford Escape donor recently reminded us of the value of seeking out the simple life:

“I had this car for 6 years, difficult for me to part with it now, just
difficult to continue paying insurance and find a place to park. This car
has taken me to many places without breaking down, truly appreciated the

Letting go of a beloved vehicle is not easy. It can be emotional. Some donors say that it’s like losing a member of the family.

Donate a Car Canada has been serving various H4H branches since 2014. Our early relationship was with the Quebec, Kingston/Limestone, and Victoria branches. Edmonton signed on next, and many other regions followed! Most recently, Sunshine Coast jumped on board!

These various chapters have seen thousands of donation dollars through vehicle donors whose concern is housing insecurity and equity. Donating cars serves donor, community, and caring causes

There are a number of questions that folx ask when considering donating cars:

How fast can you get here?

Is my vehicle acceptable?

How much is my tax receipt?

Well, first, our transport agents will get to you lickity-split! Many donors express surprise at how quickly and efficiently they receive their free tow. On the other hand, if you need some time, no problem! The agent will happily put things on pause until you are ready to proceed.

Second, yes! Recycle-ready vehicles make great donations! Some of our supporting agents do require that there be four tires in place. These don’t need to be in great shape — even spares will do just fine. The agents simply need to be able to roll things to the yard in a safe and cost effective manner. Of course, if there are missing parts, the scrap donation outcome may be reduced as agents determine value, in part, based on curb weight.

We either re-sell, or recycle, vehicles. Here’s more on that…

More about how your tax receipt is determined

1) If your vehicle is selected for our recycle process, the donation amount for a vehicle can be between $30.00 – $800.00. This is dependent on the area in which it is donated, and what the market will pay for the year/make/model. The vehicle will be picked up by our towing agent at no cost to you.

2) Your vehicle may be considered for sale at auction. Several factors go into qualifying a vehicle for auction. These include, but are not limited to, drivability, type of mechanical problems (if any), age, damage, visual appearance, and mileage.

Vehicles sold at auction are sold ‘as is’ and ‘unreserved’. They are sold to the highest bidder, as a full and final sale. Outcome at auction varies. As such, we cannot guarantee a specific sale result. That said, it is no unusual to see thousands of dollars sent to charities of choice when donating cars and auction sales align!

3) Our third option applies to vehicles that may not perform well at auction, but that are not ready for recycling. Our re-sale/recycle process will see our agent pick up your vehicle for free.

Once they have it on their yard they will assess it to determine if it should be re-sold or recycled. This will be based on the current market. If they see re-sale value in your vehicle, they will advertise it to their own buyer base, selling it as-is, to the highest bidder. They will send us the net proceeds from the re-sale price. If they determine that they will not find interested buyers, they will recycle your car.

Our experience tells us that we do not always see Blue/Black book value when we employ the re-sale process. That said, if you explore our social media posts you’ll see that we routinely see vehicles sell for thousands of dollars in donation returns for the donors’ charities!

The less visible benefits of donating cars

Donating cars benefits charities, to be sure. Every coin counts and your vehicle donation really piles up those coins! A tidy-sum tax receipt is always a bonus at tax time, too. But there are benefits the go beyond the bank, as well!

Environmental impact is one such bonus. Safe and clean vehicle removal declutters yards and neighbourhoods. Furthermore, proper disposal of fluids and parts ensures responsible Earth care.

Car donation scams: how can I tell?

Big promises are a big red flag! A good thing to look out for in vetting a program’s legitimacy is the dollar value they’re offering: does it reflect the market? 

The metal market goes up and down — a lot! The weight of the metal in a compact car is different from a truck, or a van. A vehicle donation program should be paid out based on that value. Parts also add value, for some kinds of vehicles. By the time the scrap yard working with you drains the fluids, takes care of the tires, strips the saleable parts, and crushes the car, they may be out of pocket.

You can also ask yourself:

How long has the program been around? 

Can I find online reviews (good and bad)? 

Is the program open about how fees are applied?

Can I talk to a real person to get answers about my concerns? How is their customer service?

If you can comfortably answer these questions, you may find yourself in very good hands!

What do I do first?

Canada is home to very few reputable vehicle donation programs, Donate a Car Canada being one of them. If they’re legitimate they will be able to provide clear answers about how they arrive at the numbers they are offering. All about your free tow (Or, Why you’ll love our agents!)

Have you had a minute to hang out on our socials? Pop ’round to Face Book or Instagram. It’s all there. One review after another after another after another! Vehicle donors love our free-tow agents, and Angelo is one of the very best!

Many of our recycle and re-sale agents have been working alongside us for over 10 years. In every province, through rain, sleet, hail, and snow, they keep right on truckin’. They’ve hauled motorized wheelchairs and motorhomes; they strap on motorcycles and hot rods. And they really do tow everything in between!

Furthermore, they do it cheerfully — with such good humour, compassion, and care!

They get it. Understanding that donating your vehicle is a serious endeavor, they treat it seriously. They appreciate that letting a vehicle go can be emotional (sometimes that emotion is relief; sometimes it feels surprisingly sad).

Taking time out to photograph a donor with their beloved donation is pretty commonplace out there in the wilds of donation! This is the kind of service Angelo has provided, year in and year out.

A tip of our hat

We have grown to respect and love this outstanding transport agent. Angelo has been the man on the truck for Everclear Metal Recycling in BC for decades. You read that right: Decades!

We’ve lost track of our first encounter with him, but he has been serving BC vehicle donors with kindness, reliability, and flexibility for years. Donors love him. Like, they really really dig this guy.

Angelo somehow knows that even old vehicles have stories, and often meaning to their owners. The world needs more Angelos!!!!

When W.N. donated their Hyundai Sonata for Diabetes Canada they noted, “All around the experience with your program was excellent. Angelo, the tow agent couldn’t have been more , pleasant. He was courteous and friendly. If there is a word better than excellent that is how I describe Angelo.“

A ’95 Chevy Lumina donor for a children’s charity stated simply, “This experience was quick and painless. Thank you for making it so easy. Finely tuned machine! The tow agent was friendly, prompt and very cheerful. Thanks for the great service!”

A content Toyota Tercel donor for Covenant House Vancouver said, “I received a phone call from Angelo. He was very cheerful and gave me lots of notice about the day/time he would come and take the car. The night before, he called again to confirm that he was coming, and we had a nice chat when he loaded the car onto the back of his truck. It only took about 15 minutes for the entire visit, again, faster than I’d expected.”

My charity is ready to roll! What now?

20 years in and vehicle donors are giving strong!

As with any sharing opportunity that’s touched by the global economy, our program has seen its ups and downs. When metal prices go up, so do vehicle donation dollars. When anomalous fluctuations in the used or new car markets hit, so do the outcomes we see for charities. We’ve had a pretty wild ride these first couple of decades!

The constant through it all? The unabashed kindness and generosity of Canadians.

Every hour of the business day (which, for us, starts somewhere around 8:00 am MT and winds up somewhere around 8:00 pm MT — 363 days a year!) we have the happiest of roles: we hang out with giving folks!

And when we’re not processing a vehicle donation, setting up a free tow, or supporting an estate settling process? We’re connecting with the charities that donors have chosen to give to!

Donors and their charities are the best of us all. They contribute to our overall quality of life through intentional caring. It just doesn’t get any better than that.

The math on those donation dollars

Donate a Car Canada’s first 20 years have seen donors hit some crazy dollar amounts! Here are some individual donation outcomes that will inspire your socks off:

Check out the donation outcome on 2023’s Tesla donation (Spoiler alert! It earned over $66,000.00 for the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation!).

Or read about a 2015 successful auction sale of a beautiful Mercedes that drew a donation of over$27,000.00 for Prostate Cancer Canada!

And not to be forgotten, just this summer a gorgeous vintage Model A Ford raised almost $11,000.00 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
