Sometimes that old scrapper feels like a lost cause. That old jalopy that’s been sitting out in the back lane? Whipper snippin’ around it, one summer after another, can get old. Shoveling it out of the latest snow fall gets a little tiresome. The car we loved (sometimes) needs a rescue.

So, our starting place when we see your SUV particulars is an assessment of age, condition, make, and model. We pay careful attention to your vehicle notes and use them to guide us in our determination of best process for your Jeep, junker, or Jaguar.

If it is auction-ready we’ll set you up with free transport to auction. There it will be sold as-is to the highest bidder.

If your vehicle is not quite the right fit for your local auction house we may assign it to a re-sale/recycle agent. These capable crews will assess the car when they have it on their yard and determine if they’ll be able to find a buyer, or if they need to pay out a recycle amount.

And if you are donating a scrapper it’s as simple as any of the above. Your free tow will ensure your junker gets to the agent’s lot and they’ll pay us the going rate for recycling in your region.

A bit more about the recycle process

Here at Donate a Car Canada we have been fortunate. Our agents, despite a metal market that ebbs and flows and ebbs again, ensure that our charities receive a donation for every donated vehicle.

We often hear the words, “My tires alone are worth more than what you’re offering!” How we appreciate the cost of tires! When you and I put new tires on our vehicles it costs us several hundreds of dollars. Unfortunately, that rubber just doesn’t hold its value once a car is ready to recycle.

Recycle agents and scrap yards cover their own costs in different ways. Some will sell individual parts. Some make their largest return on the metal that the car is made of. Others are able to fix and re-sell vehicles. Whatever the case, our agents pay us out at what the market will afford based on their own initial investment in transport, vehicle breakdown, and administrative costs.

The BC SPCA has so many ways to stay connected. For example, they are active in wildlife and farm animal care. Furthermore, veterinary support, animal adoptions, and legal wrangling are all part of their work, too. If advocacy for furry friends is on your heart-string list, this work is for you!

The BC SPCA leads the way in animal care and management.
It is the largest animal welfare organization of its kind in Canada.

They help more than 97,109 abandoned, abused, injured and homeless animals each year. Moreover, they run preventative programs around the province to address the root causes of animal suffering.

Their work is evidence-based. That means they are using the best available scientific and professional knowledge about the welfare of all animals. This includes pets, farm animals, research animals, and animals in the wild.

BC SPCA | Forever Guardians

This boots-on-the-ground charity is working to protect and enhance the quality of life for all animals.

Stollery Children’s Hospital luv

Our more well-known charities pack quite a punch in inspiring donations. It’s not unusual for the most broadly known to draw five or six digit figures over the course of a year. This past year, the Stollery Children’s Hospital was one of those charities!

That monetary impact is the direct result of vehicle donors. Car by car, and truck by truck, donation dollars add up.

But there’s more!

We work with auction houses in many of Canada’s major centers. Any time we receive a vehicle that meets our auction criteria, we have the vehicle picked-up and sold, as-is to the highest bidder. The net proceeds from the sale go to the donor’s charity of choice. This can result in a donation outcome of thousands of dollars for the cause!

Just this past month we received a call from one of our supporting auction houses. Their sub-contracted towing company made arrangements with our vehicle donor to get a car picked up and hauled in for re-sale.

Business as usual, right? So we thought…until we learned the rest of the story:

The subcontracted towing agent learned that the donor was giving the car on behalf of the Stollery Children’s Hospital. That struck a cord. The driver went an extra mile! Tows are free to our donors, of course. But our agents do need to get paid out from the value of the vehicle. ‘Nothing out of the donor’s pocket, but a modest amount is removed from the final outcome. This driver wanted to be sure that every penny went right to the SCHF. He provided his services for free!

Why this matters

Small gestures like that of this tow driver have important, incremental effect. Every donation dollar counts.

Some time ago, our then-contact at the SCHF sent us this gentle reminder of how these donation dollars impact real children:

“Madelyn was born with a serious heart problem. At only seven days old, doctors at the Stollery performed open-heart surgery on her tiny heart. Her heart was just the size of a walnut. Now two years old, Madelyn has survived two heart surgeries and is awaiting her third. She continues to grow and hit milestone after milestone at home.

Thank you for helping the Stollery care for kids like Madelyn – it’s incredibly inspiring to know that you continue to think of others during what has proven to be a difficult time for us all. Because of you, we can make sure the Stollery’s front-line caregivers have the support and specialized equipment they need to continue delivering urgent, critical care

Inn From the Cold is keeping homeless kids safe this winter. We want to help! We assess each vehicle donation individually here at Donate a Car Canada. Sometimes an old clunker that looks like she’s ready for the scrap heap will surprise us. One old Safari van did just that, with happy results for this homeless outreach charities.

One family helps another

When a Calgary family needed to clear their old minivan from the driveway, they discovered the option of gifting any Canadian charity through our program. They donated their Safari, asking that we consider it for re-sale despite it’s age and mileage.

In the market we were in at the time, that was a big ask: the Safari was 20 years old with mileage approaching 300,000 km. On paper, she was ready for her last ride. Finding a buyer for a van on her last legs can be a challenge, but the family requested that we consider her for auction.

Happily, the right buyer just happened to be on site on sale day. The van caught their eye, and a generous sale bid was made. Inn From the Cold was the happy recipient of a gift of over $500.00!

What is “Inn from the Cold”?

Well, they’re a Calgary-based organization with a simple mission. They provide shelter, nutritious food, clothing, medical care and access to education for children and their families.

In 2015, 43,667 shelter bed stays were possible, we served 131,001 meals to homeless children and their families, and were able to offer our Early Childhood Development Programs to 5,535 participants. Your donations allow us to offer shelter, sanctuary, and healing to all of our guests 365 days a year.

IFTC notes that child and family homelessness is growing at an alarming rate. In 2017, they had 33,650 bed stays and throughout 2018 we have seen month over month increases. They have provided care to over 500 children experiencing homelessness since the beginning of 2018.

It’s not the $1,000,000 donation…

…that counts, notes the IFTC website, it’s the million $1.00 donations. A gift of a few hundred dollars stretches a long way to bringing relief, warmth, and education to our country’s most vulnerable families. Our unique Safari donation outcome is one of the great joys of serving our 800+ charities. We know that every vehicle has its own story and deserves a fair chance, and that every dollar that comes from donated vehicle processing counts!

“I donated a scrap car 10 years ago and got a $200.00 tax receipt! Why is my receipt lower now than it was then?”

The short answer to that question is that our vehicles simply aren’t worth their weight in metal when the market hits certain lows. When the scrap metal market is strong, our ’98 Honda or ’01 Mazda may be worth $200.00 or $300.00 at the yard. When the market hits the lows we’ve been seeing since 2015, the same cars may be worth $25.00 – $75.00 on the scale.
