Playing it cool

“Hasn’t been driven in 3 years. May need new gas, oil change.” We couldn’t have known, based on this unassuming, two-sentence description, that B.H. was donating a gem. His Porsche Cayman blew our minds on sale day!

Now, it’s not every day that a unique vehicle like this comes rolling through our program. Every donated vehicle is carefully considered upon application. Some are salvage ready; others are ready to find a new home.

We note year, make and model, as well as mileage on each unit. The overall condition of each vehicle is noted. We rely heavily on the information that the donor provides for this. Whether a car is a clunker or cream of the crop, we are careful to assign it to the process that will bring the highest donation return possible.

And, when a Porsche Cayman cruises in, we take a good long look.

We did not expect the multi-digit donation outcome that would result from this beauty’s sale at auction!

Donor turns his generous attention toward helping fellow Canadians

When you donate a vehicle through Donate a Car Canada you can select any charity in the country as recipient for your gift. You read that right! ANY registered Canadian charity can accept vehicle donations here!

Every now and then a donor will express the “Why!” of their charity of choice.

More often, folx just quietly fill in their donation form. They add a few vehicle notes. Tow particulars are provided. No story or explanation of why they are choosing their charity is offered.

This was the case with B.H.

He simply stated his vehicle details and contact information.

Then, he scrolled through our list of receiving organizations and selected the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SSVP). This is a faith-based charity that works to, “practically resolve issues, one neighbour in need at a time, and give voice to the voiceless with love, respect, justice, hope and joy.”

A bit more about the Vincentians

“Founded in 1833, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SSVP) is an international lay organization, united in the mission to serve persons in need. In Canada alone, the SSVP helps more than 350,000 people each year. We provide material support in the form of non-perishable food, clothes, household items and furniture to individuals and families across the country. Whether in their homes, on the street, in shelters, in hospitals or in prison, our work knows no boundaries. The Society also provides assistance to refugees, immigrants, and northern communities.  Our founding activity, still practiced today, is the Home Visit. Through these visits, our members, known as Vincentians, establish personal relationships with persons in need by offering material assistance, as well as friendship and understanding.”

It’s easy to see why B.H. directed his gift toward the society! And, oh what a gift it was!

Rolling that Porsche Cayman through the auction lanes

The Cayman was put up for sale late in May. Buyers were interested, and bids were strong! The Porsche sold well and by the end of June we had received payment and were ready to disburse B.H.’s gift to the society!

The final gift sent off to the charity? $46,215.70 was gifted to facilitate housing, social justice, advocacy, youth support, and special projects!

Disability pride explored in colour

The disability pride flag is flyin’ high through the month of July! Here’s the meaning behind what you’re seeing:

• All six flag colors: Disability spans borders between nations
• Black background: Mourning for victims of ableist violence and abuse
• Diagonal Band: Cutting across the walls and barriers that separate disabled people from society
• Red Stripe: Physical disabilities
• Gold Stripe: Neurodivergence
• White Stripe: Invisible and undiagnosed disabilities
• Blue Stripe: Psychiatric disabilities
• Green Stripe: Sensory disabilities

How can we honour disability pride? What our charities have to say

The BC Epilepsy Society (one of our receiving charities) noted this on one of their social media posts this week,

“This month, we celebrate the diversity, experiences, and contributions of everyone in the disability community while recognizing the importance of accessibility, inclusion, and belonging. For many of us living with epilepsy, disability can be visible, invisible, or experienced differently from one person to the next. Every experience is valid, and every voice matters. Together, we can help build communities where everyone is respected, included, and supported.”

The Cochrane Public Library offers a challenge. “Disability Pride Month aims to change the way the world views disability—promoting it not as something to be fixed, but as a natural and beautiful part of human diversity. 22 percent of Canadians—about 6.2 million people—live with a disability.“

A better place when all are included

Big Brothers Big Sisters posts, “Every July, we celebrate Disability Pride Month, a time to recognize and honour the diversity, achievements, and lived experiences of people with disabilities. This year’s theme, The World Works Better With Us, highlights the importance of meaningful inclusion, accessibility, and respect in our workplaces, communities, and everyday lives.”

And the Centre for Autism Services chimes, “Every year in July, Disability Pride Month celebrates persons who experience disability, their identities and culture, and their positive contributions to society. It aims to change the way people think about disability and promotes all types of disability as a natural part of human diversity. Disability Pride Month has been celebrated in the United States since July 1990 when the Americans with Disabilities Act came into law. Today, it is celebrated around the world, including in Canada, where 22 per cent or 6.2 million Canadians live with a disability. Did you know the gold stripe in the Disability Pride Flag represents Neurodivergence? Let’s use this month to learn about, understand, and celebrate persons with disabilities, and work together to create more respectful and inclusive communities all year long!”

You can make it happen!

You can play a part in creating an inclusive and always-dignifying Canada! Start close to home! Then, learn about and build relationship with the people right around you that live with disabilities. It can be helpful to remember that many (many!) disabilities are invisible. Do your part to be the diagonal band on that flag! Let’s remove barriers; let’s leave behind ableist and exclusionary beliefs and practices!

One hands-on way to make a difference today? Explore the charities in your community that are championing folx with diverse abilities. These charities have been tending this work for decades. You can help them continue their Good Work! Where do we start? We can begin by getting involved, volunteering, and giving!

Kia Borrego donor makes a difference

When C.M. arrived in our system with their KIA donation late in June, we had to pause. “What is a KIA Borrego?” we wondered. The model just didn’t ring a bell. That, it turns out, was for good reason. This SUV had an unusually short run. But more on that later.

With a little more digging I discovered that we’d actually seen another Borrego donation…almost 10 years ago! Back in 2018 a Calgary KIA donor gifted a re-sale ready Borrego. Sent to auction, it raised a gift of $664.87 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada!

C.M.’s SUV was donated ready for its last ride. Our agent deemed it recycle-ready and a gift of several hundred dollars will be sent to the donor’s chosen charity. They note,

“I recently donated my 2009 KIA Borrego to Donate a Car Canada with proceeds going to Windsor Cancer Care Foundation. I was very pleased with the entire process dealing with Donate a Car. They explained everything clearly, returned calls promptly and arrived to pick up my car right on time. It was a pleasure to work with them and I would definitely recommend them if you have a vehicle you no longer need.“

A bit more about this unique vehicle

Consumer Reports describes it best, “The Borrego has traditional body-on-frame construction and impressive towing capacity. The 3.8-liter V6 delivers strong and refined performance and 16 mpg overall. A 4.6-liter V8 is optional. Steering is responsive but handling can get a bit lumbering. Emergency handling can be disconcerting, but stability control keeps it ultimately secure. The ride is stiff and punishing and the Borrego tends to heave and pitch in bumpy corners. Interior room is generous, with a useful third-row seat, and the quiet cabin is well-finished. Controls are simple and there is lots of equipment for the price. The Borrego was discontinued after the 2009 model.“

“The Kia Borrego was a mid-sized SUV that offered seating for seven with options for a V6 or a more powerful V8 engine, with either two-wheel or four-wheel drive. It featured plenty of interior options, multiple trim levels and a competitive price tag. A heart-warming tale right from Guild Festival Theatre’s GFT Times

A Father’s Day Story

What do you do with a half-burnt pickup truck? As it turns out, you can turn it into a gift to support the arts.

This Father’s Day, we’re sharing a story about a truck, a dad, and one final gift to Guild Festival Theatre.

Artistic Director Emeritus, Helen Juvonen, recently turned her late father’s pickup truck into a donation to GFT through Donate A Car Canada. In Helen’s words: 

“When my father passed away in 2022 I inherited his pick-up truck. He had loaned it to me several times over the years, often to haul set pieces all across the city.

The truck did a lot of heavy lifting for GFT – transporting the Drowning Girls bathtubs, audience chairs, and going on tour to Prescott and Port Perry, carrying all of Alice in Wonderland’s unusual props. It was even immortalized on film in my web series You’re Never Alone.

Act Two for a truck with Guild Festival Theatre ties

In April, while I was away in Prince George (and about 15 minutes before showtime) I got a call from Tyler. The truck had caught fire in our driveway. He wasn’t home at the time but our neighbours had quickly called 911. Nobody was hurt, there was some minor damage to our property, but our garbage bins had melted and the truck was…toast. We can’t be absolutely sure what happened but our best guess is that a rodent chewed a wire and its nest, or some other debris, caught on fire. But I think it was a sign from my dad – probably warning us that the cost of upkeep and gas wasn’t worth it anymore.

Now, what to do with a half-burnt pick-up truck? A little research led us to Donate-A-Car Canada. They sent a tow truck to haul it away, the truck was evaluated and we had $300 to donate to charity. It seemed fitting that its final act was a donation to the theatre. Thanks, Dad.“

Woodlands Wildlife Sanctuary is signed up! A generous Subaru Outback donor connected to donate their vehicle and named the refuge as their charity of choice. How exactly does this work?

When you filling in your form you’ll find our list of charities. It is a long, long list! One recent donor jokingly said, “This process was all so easy…except scrolling all the way down to the “W’s” to find my chosen charity!”

How did charities get on that list?

Donor’s like our recent Subaru saint requested that the charity they love be added to the list. If your beloved local, regional, or national work is not already on our list you’ll be able to request that we get ‘er done. And we will!

What is the donation value of a Subaru?

The first “value” of every vehicle donation is the experience itself. You can expect exceptional donor support and the thrill of knowing you’ve made a difference for the cause you care about.

The Outback donor we mention above wrote in to say, “‘Application online was very fast and easy with a well designed online application. Response after application was prompt and informative. Tow service was prompt, friendly and efficient. They went above and beyond as I accidently locked all of the keys in the car as I prepared it for pickup. The driver came to the location of the car and patiently gained access then drove the car back to his shop with dealer plates. I found him very friendly, skilled and patient. A totally positive experience!“

What if my car is in great condition and not ready for the scrap yard?

Whenever possible, our agents work diligently and capably to re-sell donated vehicles. This can be done through auction where vehicles are sold as-is to the highest bidder. Or, an agent might shop the Subaru (or any other amazing make) around to their substantial base of interested vehicle buyers.

Where a recycle-ready vehicle can bring in hundreds of dollars, a re-sale ready vehicle can bring in several thousand. Here is an example or two:

Camry donors fill charity piggy banks one car at a time

‘Considering vehicle donation? These Camry donation outcomes might inspire you to punch the gas on your decision!

In the first few months of this year we’ve excitedly disbursed $618.55 to the Farley Foundation. A loving daughter facilitated the process on behalf of her father. $985.80 went to Autism Ontario, and $6,324.00 to Parkinson Canada! Re-sale ready vehicles earn big for every donor’s charity of choice.

Has your Toyota given you all it has to give? Whenever we are unable to re-sale a donated vehicle, it is recycled. Every year, hundreds of vehicles are scrapped for charity. Here are just a few organizations that have benefitted from scrapping a Camry in the past couple of months: The Scott Mission, Abbey Cat Adoptions, The Heart & Stroke Foundation, and the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation! As I finish up this week’s post, we’re wrapping up a $600.00 Camry gift for The Ottawa Mission. SPCA Saskatoon will benefit from a rusty and salvage-ready Camry with a recycle donation outcome. Diabetes Canada and YFC London both have similar gift amounts coming to them at month end, as will a hospital foundation in BC.

In the summer of 2021 we celebrated an anniversary of sorts! We first encountered Heritage Office Furnishings six years ago. Almost to the day of this original post. From the start they set themselves apart as a special donor. Their first gift? Three (3) vehicles!

Ever so quietly, HOF has continued this practice of giving. Just this month they donated yet another Chevy. Without fanfare they give Dodge after Chevy…after Dodge. This kind of Goodness is about more than just money. In so giving,

• Heritage Office Furnishings engages in good practices in managing their fleet.
• Earth care is part of the gift. Moreover, our agents endeavor to employ green practices in vehicle recycling and re-selling.
• Car, truck, and van donation supports other local business. Our agents, coast-to-coast, serve in your backyards.
• Canadian charities are supported. Again and again! Every donated unit is looked at individually. The donor receives a free tow. The charity receives the net proceeds from the re-sale or recycling of the car, truck, van, or motorcycle.

The Regional Animal Protection Society (RAPS) can be your charity of choice thanks to this company!

RAPS

The Regional Animal Protection Society is all about critter care.

“Our dream is to provide a community where no stray cats roam the streets. All animals should be loved and respected, and have lifelong homes.”

The RAPS Cat Sanctuary was built in order to rescue and protect homeless and abandoned cats and kittens. It is now one of the largest cat sanctuaries in North America. The Sanctuary provides a safe permanent home to hundreds of feral, abandoned, and surrendered cats. It is maintained by about 200 volunteers who create a loving, clean, comfortable, and safe home for the cats.

All of the cats are treated at the RAPS Animal Hospital. This is one of the largest not-for-profit animal hospitals in Canada. RAPS believes that every life is a valuable life.

VOKRA

This June (with donation number 17, if you can imagine!), HOF selected a different charity. The happy recipient-to-be?

VOKRA – the Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association. Their mission? To end kitten homelessness one trap at a time.

“At VOKRA our mission is to end cat overpopulation and homelessness. One of the ways we’re helping accomplish this is through to Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), the process of trapping feral cats, spaying or neutering them, and then returning them to the location they came from. Trapping these cats and kittens is the first step towards finding them their furever homes.“

Saskatchewan company, K+S Potash Canada, puts people first

We first “met” K+S Potash in September of 2023. They arrived on the site with a single F-150 and a question: Would it be possible to donate several decomissioned company vehicles from their Bethune, Saskatchewan location? Eighteen (18!) trucks later and we can heartily say, Yes! It most certainly is possible.

The company asked themselves,

“What does it mean to be a good neighbour?”

And they came up with a robust answer: Being a good neighbor means considering others. 

They strive to be respectful, aware, and approachable. They aim to do the right thing, and to always keep in mind the full lifecycle of our projects. Being a good neighbour is a vital part of they are, helping them operate in Saskatchewan for years to come. 

They demonstrate their commitment to being a good neighbour through community involvement and environmental care. Building and maintaining meaningful relationships with local Indigenous Peoples and communities in the regions were K+S Potash Canada operates is key to this commitment, too.

Building Youth in Saskatchewan and British Columbia

You’ll want to visit the K+S Potash Canada Face Book page! But before you do, we just want to circle back to this company’s vehicle donation generosity.

After our first encounter with K+S and their Ford F-150 in September of 2023, the rolled into our program in a big way just two months later. That November they donated eight (8!) more trucks. One of the perks of vehicle donation here is that you can choose ANY Canadian charity to receive your gift. This company’s charity-of-choice? Diabetes Canada!

Flip the calendar forward: In early October 2024 we received another ten (yes…10!) truck donations…for the same charity!

But back to youth in Saskatchewan and BC. If you visit the company’s Face Book page you’ll see that this kind of giving is nothing new for them. They have their own initiative called Youth+Us with an aim to “build a healthier happier future” for youth. They are committed to empowering the young people in our communities and create lasting, meaningful change. 

Then came 2025 – K+S Potash wasn’t done giving yet!

We shouldn’t have been surprised, then, when this money-where-their-heart-is company rolled back on in with another multi-vehicle donation! Creating their own Christmas miracle, they started with a Dodge Ram. And ended with a Dodge Ram. And, just for good measure, included three more Dodge Rams in between. That’s right! They donated another five 5 company trucks.

Their chosen charity for 2025? The Moose Jaw and District Food Bank.

Repeat fleet for a very Happy New Year 2026

Starting 2026 off right meant donating yet another five Dodge Ram 1500 fleet for the food bank. This is a company that just keeps on giving!

Inspired to extend a little neighbourly generosity of your own?

K+S Potash Canada is one company that has their community foot forward in Saskatchewan and BC. If you as an individual, or as a company representative, are inspired to follow their example, there are so many creative ways to do so!

For our part, we are at the ready to support you in vehicle donation. If you are donating more than one vehicle at a time you can even choose different charities for each one. The process is kept simple and quick. The tow (or tows) is/are always free. Furthermore, you, or your company, will receive a tax receipt issued to the registered vehicle owner.

How much is that tax receipt?

Donate A Car Canada has three possible sale procedures that maximize the donation outcome for our charities:

First, your vehicle may be selected for recycling. The donation amount for a scrap-ready vehicle is between $30.00 – $800.00. This is dependent on the area in which it is donated, and what the market will pay for the year/make/model. The amount that applies to you will always be clearly communicated and you will be given the option to cancel if you feel it does not reflect the value of your vehicle. And remember: the tow is always free!

Second, your vehicle may be considered for sale at auction, and several factors go into qualifying a vehicle for this. These include, but are not limited to, drivability, type of mechanical problems (if any), age, damage, visual appearance, and mileage.

Vehicles sold at auction are sold ‘as is’ and ‘unreserved’. They are sold to the highest bidder, as a full and final sale. Outcome at auction varies. As such, we cannot guarantee a specific sale result.

What if the vehicle isn’t quite scrap ready, but it’s running too rough for auction?

Our third option applies to vehicles that may not perform well at auction, but that are not ready for recycling. Our re-sale/recycle process will see our agent pick up your vehicle for free. Once they have it on their yard they will assess it to determine if it should be re-sold or recycled. This will be based on the current market. If they see re-sale value in your vehicle, they will advertise it to their own buyer base, selling it as-is, to the highest bidder. They will send us the net proceeds from the re-sale price. If they determine that they will not find interested buyers, they will recycle your car.

After the sale of your vehicle and our accounting process is complete, we will email stating the amount of your donation. You will then receive a tax receipt via CanadaHelps within one (1) week of the charity receiving your gift through us.

One donor’s efforts to support Adopt-a-Dog/Save-a-Life

Before you read on to our previously posted story about a stellar one-time donation outcome for the compassionate work of Adopt-a-Dog/Save-a-Life:

In the last two years, one donor, has taken supporting this rescue into his own…er…paws. We first met G.M. in the summer of 2025 when he rolled into our program with a scrap-ready Honda Fit. Seeing how simple and quick the process was, he submitted a second vehicle just two hours later! His Toyota Matrix was quickly assigned to the same tow agent. His double donation for the dog rescue was underway!

Despite flat tires and rust damage, both vehicles were picked up (via free tow!) per G.M.’s timing request.

Single-handedly, this one donor raised almost $1000.00 for the charity that summer!

This spring he was back again! His Mazda 6 was proving to be more heartache than it was worth. A blown radiator and done-in transmission were the final straw. He opted to donate again. He chose Adopt-a-Dog for the third time!

Can we get a drum roll for this amazing donation?

Since we wrote about Adopt-a-Dog earlier this year, we’ve had an extraordinary donor story update: A 1997 Winnebago Adventurer donor donated an astounding $11,450.00 to Adopt-a-Dog/Save-a-Life this November!

How they get it done

Adopt-a-dog/Save-a-life is a Canadian charity dedicated to saving abandoned dogs and placing them in loving, caring homes. They do not have a physical shelter. Their dogs are all cared for by dedicated volunteer foster parents.

The charity has a no kill policy. They encourage all animal shelters and rescues to incorporate policies that would have all dogs spayed and neutered before they are put up for adoption.

Their success stories will re-boot your COVID-weary heart!

Adopt-a-dog/Save-a-life Fostering

AAD/SAL’s rescue work is dependent on dog fostering. Curious about what that involves? Here’s an invitation into this work:

“Have you ever wanted to do something that really made a difference? Giving a homeless dog a temporary home changes the life of that dog forever. The stories of their lives can be heart-wrenching, but you can help to give them a happy ending. In order for us to save lives and find homes, we need your help. We could not rescue dogs without our dedicated foster parents.

We do not expect our foster parents to be dog experts or dog trainers. That said, we do want people who love and care about the welfare of dogs. Some of our foster parents have never owned a dog but they are comfortable with dogs and want to help a dog in need. We recommend you have some hands-on experience with dogs. A certain level of confidence is necessary when bringing a dog into your home.

Our adoptions take place mainly in the Toronto area. For this reason we find it easiest to work with foster homes in the GTA. We do make exceptions and are willing to speak with individuals who live an hour or so outside of Toronto. If you do live outside of the downtown area you must have a car and be willing to pick up the dog and supplies. For those of you who live further away please consider contacting a rescue in your area.

We supply everything you may need; you just supply the warm home and the love!”

I can’t home a dog – How can I help?

Hosting a fund raiser is always a win! AAD/SAL operates on donations, so getting the word out and raising dollars helps.

Dog taxi service is always in demand! If you’re in the GTA, become a driver for fostered dogs who need a lift to their next vet appointment!

Donation dollars have the most direct impact, of course. Cash is tight for many of us. In that case, donating your old vehicle serves well. Moreover, car/truck donation serves you, the charity, your local economy, and the environment.

This means of donation is an all around win, and you’ll see a tax receipt for your efforts!

Nothing says it better than a multi-vehicle hospice donor

It is not unusual, having had a gratifying, efficient, and generous donation experience, for donors to come back again and again. One Alberta social services company is an example of the satisfaction of donating many vehicles over time.

When the support services entity originally found us, they had four (4!) company vehicles to donate. They gifted an entire fleet of five Dodge Caravans over a four month period.

Although it was a fleet, each minivan was assessed on its own merit. Some were re-sale ready; some needed to come off the road. Donations ranging from $500.00 to $716.12 were raised for each one!

With over 80,000 Canadian charities to choose from, the agency could have selected anyone to gift. Their charity of choice? Pilgrims Hospice Society was the grateful recipient!

But wait! They weren’t done giving, yet!

As we speak, we are working on yet another grief support donation from this social services crew! Hospice Calgary Society will be receiving their proceeds from this week’s minivan donation shortly.

While grief is common to us all, offering grief support is something special indeed. Death care and the depth of creativity, compassion, and good humour practiced by staff and volunteers in these spaces is laudable.
