Good vibe donors

Sometimes a donor and their story just get us right in the feels in a special way. Anna and her donated Fiat are one of those combinations! As so many donors do, she came to us with the facts. And, as her process evolved, more and more of her generosity of heart emerged. Bit-by-bit her history of giving and volunteering became apparent — as did her delightful sense of humour!

Oh, the difference one (beloved) donated Fiat can make

“Knowing that Abbey Cat Adoptions will benefit thanks to your auction process makes giving up my car a whole lot easier.” When Anna filled in the form for her donated Fiat she had a sense of just how much the car meant to her,

“(My) attachment may be even a little stronger than for some other folks, as the little Fiat is my first car (I bought it later in life, when moving from Toronto to Durham Region for a few years). But that said, my attachment to organic earthlings, particularly cats, is stronger. I’m so happy that ‘Lola”s sale will benefit Abbey Cats >^^<“

And sweet little Lola did, indeed, make a difference for Abbey Cat Adoptions!

Donated Fiat sent to auction

When a vehicle is donated (for ANY charity in Canada!), it is either re-sold, or recycled.

Vehicle donation begins with a few vehicle notes. Make, model, mileage, and overall condition count. When Anna donated her Fiat, she ticked all of the right boxes for us.

“I got the summer tires put on today and the techs informed me that the car needs to have the alignment done. I’d determined in November, after getting the winter tires put on and spending $3K on fuel induction service, replacing front brake pads and rotors, having the brake system flushed, and 4-wheel alignment, that I would donate the car this spring. I do not have the means for continued bi-annual repair/replacement expenses. Had I chosen to do the alignment and oil change, the car would have been fine. The engine and battery are fine. The car does have a 3-year-old dent / scrape above the rear passenger seat wheel, but the dent / scrape has never rusted. The hood has an odd kind of whitish ring that has been there for several years, perhaps from too much time in the sun?”

Sale day!

Most vehicle donations skip along at a speedy pace. It is not unusual for the tow truck to arrive within just a day or two of your submission online! That free tow gets things rolling quickly.

When a vehicle is recycled things continue at that pace. You might see your receipt within just a couple of weeks.

Lola the donated Fiat needed a little more time. She was re-sale ready, and our auction house ensured she was picked up in a timely manner. Our re-sale and auction agents make it their business to shop donated vehicles around until they find the buyer willing to offer the strongest dollar return possible for the vehicle. Anna’s car didn’t find her new home right away. She had to roll through more than one auction sale. But when the right buyer arrived on the scene, they made a strong bid. That meant a hearty donation for Abbey Cat and a proper receipt for Anna!

Lola raised $1006.25 at auction! Anna wrote, “It has been a real pleasure donating my car through Donate A Car Canada! Your personal touch is very much appreciated. Now that it’s all official, I will share with you my official tribute to Lola (see below). Lola and I used to transport Abbey Cats to and from vet appointments, hence the Feline Imperial Auto Transport! Thank you for helping me help kitty cats >^^<“

The ripple effect of one donated Fiat

Anna and Lola so touched the hearts of our little team here at Donate a Car Canada. We love-love-love it when generosity comes in layers like this. Lola and her driver were doing Good for kitty care long before we every met them. Around here, every car counts! One senior-supporting donor knows this better than most: he donated seven (7!!) vehicles in 2025! And calling all seniors! I’m one of you, now. Hoooboy, has this season in my life ever snuck up on me! One of the things I’ve recently wrapped up in a tidy bow is my will and estate plan. What a task!

It is becoming more and more prevalent to ensure vehicles are disposed of properly. There is a lot of controversy around carbon footprints. What is left behind when a vehicle is no longer drivable? Moreover, what about the carbon footprint left behind in the manufacturing of our cars and trucks?

Recycling is all about stewardship

The truth of the matter is we need to increase awareness. Let’s take whatever recycling action we can! For us, that means we assist in the proper removal and disposal methods available to us.

We believe Donate A Car Canada has a role and responsibility when a vehicle is submitted for donation. It is our best effort to work with agents across the country that have a similar mindset. We understand that it is a costly process for scrap yards/auto wreckers to engage in. Furthermore, not all agents are in a position to make the recycling transition as of yet.

In the words of the Automotive Recyclers of Canada, “Recyclers purchase end-of-life and accidented vehicles, and ensure that all vehicles are retired in an environmentally sound manner. They spend significant resources to build and maintain facilities specially designed to capture and store harmful materials, keeping them from contaminating soil and groundwater.”

When a vehicle is properly discarded, up to 85% of parts can be recycled for other uses! This typically means recycled steel manufacturing. Proper disposal of gasoline, oil products, or anti-freeze helps! These agents prevent waste from seeping into the ground. That eliminates contamination that can cause harm both to the environment and to the soil long term.

Who is behind the wheel on recycling?

One of our key agents has been instrumental in pursuing and generating change in the industry. As president of the Alberta Automotive Recyclers and Dismantlers Association he helps the cause. He is also on the Board with the Automotive Recyclers of Canada. As you will see in this interview, Steve Cox from Allwest Auto Parts in Edmonton, Alberta, is passionate about his work! specializing in all sorts of critter care. One BC donor gave her Mazda to one such charity with a happy result!

Cats benefit from trusty SUV

Cats Anonymous is set to receive a strong donation from H.D. She wrote,

SUV runs like a dream – love it and would keep it but I’m living with and taking care of my parents. I use their car to take them to appointments and do the shopping so my car just sits in their driveway!

I rarely took it on the highway. Used mostly for shopping and taking the dogs out to the park! No scratches or dents that I know of and never been involved in an accident of any kind. I bought it brand new and I’ve been the only driver. It has been serviced by Mazda regularly and has only ever had to have tune ups. Nothing has ever gone wrong with it. Extremely reliable!

The angel is in the details

We love hearing our donor’s stories! When you fill in your online donation form you’ll have the chance to give us the particulars. You can see as little, or as much as you like. The more we know, the more accurately we can assign to process.

Our BC donor went on to note,
“Two of the tires have a slow leak so they need fixing or replacing. Also the passenger rear mirror is broken – just the mirror, the casing around it is intact. Oh, the passenger rear brake light cover is broken and needs replacing. The light works fine, so just the red cover needs replacing.”

Just a matter of finding the right buyer

With those helpful details in sight, we assigned H.D’s SUV to our auction house. A little spit ‘n polish and some patience later, and voila! The right buyer rolled through the auction lot and made a sturdy offer.

Meet the D’Mello Family

A video is worth a thousand words (so three must be worth 3,000?)! Meet the family who has a mission to express their deep gratitude for RMH South Central Ontario:

Welcoming three wee ones into the world came with unexpected challenges for one of the baby girls. The D’Mello family found themselves unexpectedly in need of supports extending far outside of their little crew of six.

“As parents of spontaneous triplets (Josie, Chloe & Zoe) and our now 4 year old (Capri), our family faced
unimaginable challenges when one of our daughters, Josie, was diagnosed
with severe Cerebral Palsy.“

“During countless hospital admissions and
extended stays totaling 200+ days, Ronald McDonald House provided us with
far more than just a place to sleep, it gave us comfort, hope, support, and
a sense of normalcy during an incredibly difficult chapter of our lives.

The staff, volunteers, and supporters made us feel welcomed and cared for
every single day. They truly created a home away from home for our family
when we needed it most.”

Dad goes on to say, “The Ronald McDonald House means so much to our family. During one of the
most difficult times in our lives, the House and its incredible staff, volunteers, and supporters made it feel like a true home away from home. We were truly blessed to have had the opportunity to stay there while our
daughter received care.”

Playing it cool

“Hasn’t been driven in 3 years. May need new gas, oil change.” We couldn’t have known, based on this unassuming, two-sentence description, that B.H. was donating a gem. His Porsche Cayman blew our minds on sale day!

Now, it’s not every day that a unique vehicle like this comes rolling through our program. Every donated vehicle is carefully considered upon application. Some are salvage ready; others are ready to find a new home.

We note year, make and model, as well as mileage on each unit. The overall condition of each vehicle is noted. We rely heavily on the information that the donor provides for this. Whether a car is a clunker or cream of the crop, we are careful to assign it to the process that will bring the highest donation return possible.

And, when a Porsche Cayman cruises in, we take a good long look.

We did not expect the multi-digit donation outcome that would result from this beauty’s sale at auction!

Donor turns his generous attention toward helping fellow Canadians

When you donate a vehicle through Donate a Car Canada you can select any charity in the country as recipient for your gift. You read that right! ANY registered Canadian charity can accept vehicle donations here!

Every now and then a donor will express the “Why!” of their charity of choice.

More often, folx just quietly fill in their donation form. They add a few vehicle notes. Tow particulars are provided. No story or explanation of why they are choosing their charity is offered.

This was the case with B.H.

He simply stated his vehicle details and contact information.

Then, he scrolled through our list of receiving organizations and selected the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SSVP). This is a faith-based charity that works to, “practically resolve issues, one neighbour in need at a time, and give voice to the voiceless with love, respect, justice, hope and joy.”

A bit more about the Vincentians

“Founded in 1833, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SSVP) is an international lay organization, united in the mission to serve persons in need. In Canada alone, the SSVP helps more than 350,000 people each year. We provide material support in the form of non-perishable food, clothes, household items and furniture to individuals and families across the country. Whether in their homes, on the street, in shelters, in hospitals or in prison, our work knows no boundaries. The Society also provides assistance to refugees, immigrants, and northern communities.  Our founding activity, still practiced today, is the Home Visit. Through these visits, our members, known as Vincentians, establish personal relationships with persons in need by offering material assistance, as well as friendship and understanding.”

It’s easy to see why B.H. directed his gift toward the society! And, oh what a gift it was!

Rolling that Porsche Cayman through the auction lanes

The Cayman was put up for sale late in May. Buyers were interested, and bids were strong! The Porsche sold well and by the end of June we had received payment and were ready to disburse B.H.’s gift to the society!

The final gift sent off to the charity? $46,215.70 was gifted to facilitate housing, social justice, advocacy, youth support, and special projects!

The disability pride flag is flyin’ high through the month of July! Here’s the meaning behind what you’re seeing:

• All six flag colors: Disability spans borders between nations
• Black background: Mourning for victims of ableist violence and abuse
• Diagonal Band: Cutting across the walls and barriers that separate disabled people from society
• Red Stripe: Physical disabilities
• Gold Stripe: Neurodivergence
• White Stripe: Invisible and undiagnosed disabilities
• Blue Stripe: Psychiatric disabilities
• Green Stripe: Sensory disabilities

How can we honour disability pride? What our charities have to say

The BC Epilepsy Society (one of our receiving charities) noted this on one of their social media posts this week,

“This month, we celebrate the diversity, experiences, and contributions of everyone in the disability community while recognizing the importance of accessibility, inclusion, and belonging. For many of us living with epilepsy, disability can be visible, invisible, or experienced differently from one person to the next. Every experience is valid, and every voice matters. Together, we can help build communities where everyone is respected, included, and supported.”

The Cochrane Public Library offers a challenge. “Disability Pride Month aims to change the way the world views disability—promoting it not as something to be fixed, but as a natural and beautiful part of human diversity. 22 percent of Canadians—about 6.2 million people—live with a disability.“

A better place when all are included

Big Brothers Big Sisters posts, “Every July, we celebrate Disability Pride Month, a time to recognize and honour the diversity, achievements, and lived experiences of people with disabilities. This year’s theme, The World Works Better With Us, highlights the importance of meaningful inclusion, accessibility, and respect in our workplaces, communities, and everyday lives.”

And the Centre for Autism Services chimes, “Every year in July, Disability Pride Month celebrates persons who experience disability, their identities and culture, and their positive contributions to society. It aims to change the way people think about disability and promotes all types of disability as a natural part of human diversity. Disability Pride Month has been celebrated in the United States since July 1990 when the Americans with Disabilities Act came into law. Today, it is celebrated around the world, including in Canada, where 22 per cent or 6.2 million Canadians live with a disability. Did you know the gold stripe in the Disability Pride Flag represents Neurodivergence? Let’s use this month to learn about, understand, and celebrate persons with disabilities, and work together to create more respectful and inclusive communities all year long!”

You can make it happen!

You can play a part in creating an inclusive and always-dignifying Canada! Start close to home! Then, learn about and build relationship with the people right around you that live with disabilities. It can be helpful to remember that many (many!) disabilities are invisible. Do your part to be the diagonal band on that flag! Let’s remove barriers; let’s leave behind ableist and exclusionary beliefs and practices!

Kia Borrego donor makes a difference

When C.M. arrived in our system with their KIA donation late in June, we had to pause. “What is a KIA Borrego?” we wondered. The model just didn’t ring a bell. That, it turns out, was for good reason. This SUV had an unusually short run. But more on that later.

With a little more digging I discovered that we’d actually seen another Borrego donation…almost 10 years ago! Back in 2018 a Calgary KIA donor gifted a re-sale ready Borrego. Sent to auction, it raised a gift of $664.87 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada!

C.M.’s SUV was donated ready for its last ride. Our agent deemed it recycle-ready and a gift of several hundred dollars will be sent to the donor’s chosen charity. They note,

“I recently donated my 2009 KIA Borrego to Donate a Car Canada with proceeds going to Windsor Cancer Care Foundation. I was very pleased with the entire process dealing with Donate a Car. They explained everything clearly, returned calls promptly and arrived to pick up my car right on time. It was a pleasure to work with them and I would definitely recommend them if you have a vehicle you no longer need.“

A bit more about this unique vehicle

Consumer Reports describes it best, “The Borrego has traditional body-on-frame construction and impressive towing capacity. The 3.8-liter V6 delivers strong and refined performance and 16 mpg overall. A 4.6-liter V8 is optional. Steering is responsive but handling can get a bit lumbering. Emergency handling can be disconcerting, but stability control keeps it ultimately secure. The ride is stiff and punishing and the Borrego tends to heave and pitch in bumpy corners. Interior room is generous, with a useful third-row seat, and the quiet cabin is well-finished. Controls are simple and there is lots of equipment for the price. The Borrego was discontinued after the 2009 model.“

Another take:

A heart-warming tale right from Guild Festival Theatre’s GFT Times

A Father’s Day Story

What do you do with a half-burnt pickup truck? As it turns out, you can turn it into a gift to support the arts.

This Father’s Day, we’re sharing a story about a truck, a dad, and one final gift to Guild Festival Theatre.

Artistic Director Emeritus, Helen Juvonen, recently turned her late father’s pickup truck into a donation to GFT through Donate A Car Canada. In Helen’s words: 

“When my father passed away in 2022 I inherited his pick-up truck. He had loaned it to me several times over the years, often to haul set pieces all across the city.

The truck did a lot of heavy lifting for GFT – transporting the Drowning Girls bathtubs, audience chairs, and going on tour to Prescott and Port Perry, carrying all of Alice in Wonderland’s unusual props. It was even immortalized on film in my web series You’re Never Alone.

Act Two for a truck with Guild Festival Theatre ties

In April, while I was away in Prince George (and about 15 minutes before showtime) I got a call from Tyler. The truck had caught fire in our driveway. He wasn’t home at the time but our neighbours had quickly called 911. Nobody was hurt, there was some minor damage to our property, but our garbage bins had melted and the truck was…toast. We can’t be absolutely sure what happened but our best guess is that a rodent chewed a wire and its nest, or some other debris, caught on fire. But I think it was a sign from my dad – probably warning us that the cost of upkeep and gas wasn’t worth it anymore.

Now, what to do with a half-burnt pick-up truck? A little research led us to Donate-A-Car Canada. They sent a tow truck to haul it away, the truck was evaluated and we had $300 to donate to charity. It seemed fitting that its final act was a donation to the theatre. Thanks, Dad.“
