Just four years ago, Shane was a typical rough’n’tumble boy. In school, he was good in math but even better in gym class. He was strong and agile with energy to burn. Shane was in excellent physical condition. He effortlessly played a variety of sports, particularly flag football. Like most kids, he didn’t appreciate what his body was capable of, until leukemia took it all away.

Shane’s Bowflex One Part of Ongoing Recovery

Shane was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia when he was 10-years-old. ALL is a cancer of the blood. Symptoms can include fever, weight loss, pain and breathlessness, but it wasn’t the cancer that devastated Shane’s body. It was the aggressive cancer treatments that robbed him of his strength and vitality.

Today, after three and a half years of chemotherapy, Shane is 14 and cancer-free. He has been approved for a wish from The Children’s Wish Foundation, and he’s made it pretty clear that his heartfelt wish is to get his body back into shape. Shane’s wish is for a Bowflex Universal Gym so that he can not only build up his physique, but his confidence and self-esteem which also took a beating during his illness.

Shane’s future goal is to use his math skills to become an engineer. But in the meantime, he has big plans to get into shape and views a Bowflex Universal Gym as the fastest way to get there. Once he’s gained back some muscle strength and stamina, Shane says he’s going to try out for every single sport out there!
There is a chance that the leukemia could return and Shane will be ready for it. All he’ll need to do is look at his Bowflex and know that cancer might send him to the sidelines for a while, but ultimately, he has the strength and support he needs to get back in the game.

A Happy Update: Shane’s Wish Has Been Fulfilled

With the average wish valued at $10,000.00 for a Children’s Wish Foundation recipient, Kimberly’s generosity in donating her Sprinter for a gift of over $7,000.00 is a very big deal!

Beloved Sprinter a memory-maker before it was a wish granter

Kimberly and her 2006 Dodge Sprinter put many kilometers on together — over 300,000 km, in fact. Exploring Alberta and BC, there were just too many favorite spots to count. Jasper, Banff, the Island. Each new spot seemed more lovely than the last and she often found herself delighted with her explorations and adventures.

Family is where Kimberley’s heart is, and her trusty Sprinter was the reliable chariot that allowed her to trek with her cross-country-travelling parents when they visited from the East Coast. More recently, some of those Western Province trips were taken with her daughter before she passed away. Kimberly’s memories of her daughter are held precious and close. Too close for words to be put to paper here. But it was with her child in mind that Kimberley’s hard -working Dodge found its way into our program as a donation on behalf of the Children’s Wish Foundation.

The trustworthy recipients of a heartful donation

The Children’s Wish Foundation has been joyfully about the business of granting wishes to children with life-threatening illness for 30 years. We honor Kimberly as she selflessly gives of herself in this memorable and meaningful way.

Her fabulous Sprinter rolled into our program in auction-ready condition. It was put up for sale, as-is, to the highest bidder. When those bids came in close to the amount of a complete wish-grant we were over the moon! Kimberly’s child-honouring donation outcome will bring another child so very close to a realized dream. The Children’s Wish Foundation will expertly put her donated dollars to work.

Become a wish-granting vehicle donor today!

If Kimberly’s story has touched into your own, we’re here to assist. Donating a car, truck, van, SUV, or motorcycle is simple, quick, and free! First, fill in an online donation form. This will take you less than 10 minutes. Then, sit back and wait for the phone to ring. That will be your supporting transport agent calling to set up your free tow. Finally, watch your inbox. You’ll see your tax receipt there in no time!

Whether recycle-ready or primed to roll into re-sale, every vehicle counts. Donate today and help the CWF match a child to their wish today!

The Children’s Wish Foundation is one of our receiving Canadian charities, and Claire is one kiddo that has been directly impacted by donors like you!

Claire’s Wish Story (Reprinted with permission) is one example of how your car (recycle-ready, or a good candidate for auction) can have a lasting impact on the cause you care about.

It was Christmas day over three years ago, that Claire’sbrother Noah needed to see a doctor for flu-like symptoms that he had been experiencing. Thinking that Claire was likely to catch whatever he had, parents, Amber and Davor, decidedto have Claire seen by the doctor as well.

Little did they realize at the time that Noah would be just fine, and that they would spend the next week and a half in the hospital with Claire, who by all accounts appeared healthy but had low oxygen saturation levels. Expecting her to be gasping for air, or showing symptoms that would explain the low oxygen levels, the doctors were baffled. And so began the search for answers. Through rigorous testing, which included everything
from blood samples, x-rays, CT scans, and ultimately a lung biopsy surgery in May 2011, doctors finally had a conclusive answer as to what was affecting Claire’s little lungs.

Affectionately known as “Clairebear”, four year old Claire was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy (NEHI), a very rare childhood interstitial lung disease of which there are roughly 500 cases identified world-wide. In very basic terms, the disease inhibits the lung’s ability to undergo gas exchange, causing hypoxemia (low oxygen levels in the blood), which in turn causes faster breathing and respiratory distress. Due to the lack of oxygen, children with NEHI generally experience developmental delays. Sadly, there are no known medicines or treatments to cure the disease – only indefinite oxygen therapy to combat the effects of hypoxemia.

Claire has been on 24/7 oxygen since that fateful Christmas day. Luckily, she is showing no cognitive or physical developmental delays. Like most little girls she loves her dollies, pretty outfits, and chasing her brother Noah around, except she’s got an oxygen tube following her wherever she goes.

Your vehicle donation dollars add up for Canadian charities like the Children’s Wish Foundation!

When it came time to choose her wish, Disney World was the perfect fit. Claire spent an entire week meeting all her favorite Disney Princesses and even received a princess makeover at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique! Claire’s mom Amber said that week brought an immeasurable amount of joy to Claire that will be treasured for a lifetime.

Thank you for the role you play in supporting families like Claire’s when you give a car to the Canadian charities of your choosing!
