10 Pontiac donations, 10 caring causes

As we wrap up our month-end accounting (our first one of 2026!), Pontiac donations are making their giving mark for Western Canadian charities.

It’s been a unique first month of the year for Pontiac donations. Typically we see makes and models spread across the country. From PEI to Vancouver Island, all kinds of makes and models roll in. What’s unique about the Vibes, Montanas, and Sunfires this month? They are all BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba donations!

Another unique outcome? Each donor selected a different charity of choice! Often we’ll see multiple donations for some of the country’s more well known national charities. Not this month.

Three Pontiac Vibes were donated this month — two from Alberta, and one from BC. Their receiving charities: Medicine Hat SPCA, the Alberta Cancer Foundation, and the Knowledge Network Corporation.

One G5 and two G6 donations rumbled in. The donors’ chosen charities: ALIES & the Back Porch, Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, and the Linden Benevolent Society for Seniors.

Up next, a triple run of Montana donations! Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Vancouver Island, Centre Flavie Laurent, and the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre will receive their respective gifts in the next few days.

Charities all set for a winter boost

There’s nothing to clear the winter blah’s like a zot of funds to keep doing the work you love! Any charity in Canada can receive a vehicle donation through Donate a Car Canada. These Pontiac donations add up to hundreds of precious donation dollars for their receiving charities.

Charities do not pay any fees to be part of our program. Between ourselves and CanadaHelps, all aspects of the vehicle donation process are managed on each charity’s behalf. This is important because managing this as an individual charity could be cost prohibitive and unwieldy. We’re here to take care of everything from paperwork to free tows so that your charity of choice can simply keep doing the compassionate things they do best!

ALS Society charities receive car, truck, van, SUV, and motorcycle donations. From Halifax to Victoria, Canadians are impacted by ALS. Not surprisingly, their response is to give…big!

The ALS Society and awareness

We are so excited to be actively working on many vehicle donations that will go directly toward donors’ ALS-focused charities-of-choice!

Regional chapters of the society are set to receive recycle-ready Mazda, Toyota, Ford, and Pontiac donations of anywhere from $200.00 – $525.00. We have some accounting pending on an auctioned Dodge mini van that will bring over $1000.00 for the BC chapter. And a trusty 2007 Honda Accord is up on the block for sale later this month. Ontario will be the beneficiary of that gift!

What is ALS?

“ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a disease that gradually paralyzes the body. It leaves people without the ability to move, talk, swallow and eventually breathe. 80% of people die within two to five years of being diagnosed with ALS. There is no effective treatment or cure of the disease. However, ALS research has advanced to a point that effective treatments are now a matter of ‘when’ not ‘if.’ Research discovery is limited only by the amount of funding available to pursue it.”

More funding contributes to ongoing research. Eventually, improved treatments and a cure are the outcome. This is the goal of giving to this cause.

ALS Societies fund raise on a regional basis. This provides services and supports to people/families living with ALS. Furthermore, it contributes to the funding of the ALS Canada Research Program. The CRP funds research grants and fosters collaboration among Canadian researchers. ALS Societies advocate federally, provincially and locally on behalf of people and families living with ALS. This ensures better government support and access within the healthcare system.

Car donations rev their engines for charity

When you donate a car, van, SUV, or truck, you can gift any Canadian charity! There are thousands of causes, and so many charities helping in specialized ways. Donors respond by giving in unique ways, too!

How do I donate my car? Is it free?

The how-to: So easy! Complete a donation form. This will take a few minutes. Await a call from your assigned agent and have the vehicle picked up. Then, just watch for the tax receipt to arrive in your inbox.

Happily, there are no fees charged to your charity of choice. Ever! CanadaHelps (our partnering service) efficiently takes care of getting your tax receipt to you.

Your car, truck, van, or SUV will be either recycled or re-sold for the charity. The tow is free — every time!

Once the pick-up and processing are complete, we receive payment for your car. We then forward the net proceeds to your charity. Your receipt will be out to you within just a couple of weeks of final accounting getting wrapped up.

My earliest memory of a family car is a 70’s model Pontiac Catalina. Four doors. Forest green. Seats as rough as sandpaper, and an eight-track cassette player the churned out the Oakridge Boys for days.

Barbies, singalongs, & the open road

The interior of that Pontiac was astonishing. My little sister and I had the run of the place — pre-seatbelt era. We stuffed that mother ship of full-size cars to the roof with our barbies and books. We hunkered into the sunburnt back seat and sang our little lungs out, Dad harmonizing all along, on the long treks to and from Grandma’s farm.

That behemoth journeyed us across provinces and down the way to Sunday school. Countless memories were made as we squabbled and star-gazed and explored in the safety of the Catalina.

Big cars | A thing of the past?

The march of time and progress have had their effect on our relationship with big cars. Today’s full-size cars are feather-light by comparison. A car like the Catalina weighed-in closer to the size of our current mid-size SUVs (at a healthy 4000+ lbs). That said, the Dodge Charger (our best option in full-size sedans, according to CarGurus.com) weighs in with a curb weight of 4500+ lbs.

Length, height, and cargo space — not to mention our always evolving relationship with aesthetics — have shifted dramatically over time. Moreover, drivability and safety are deal breakers for today’s buyer.

Ready to move on

If you’ve been nostalgically holding on to your 70’s, 80’s, 90’s full-size car, consider extending its service in a different way? What if that non-drivable old vehicle could be transformed into donation dollars? Through our program, you can choose your charity and get that car off the back parking pad for free. Keep the steering wheel, or a chip of paint. Remove a mirror or memorialize it with a hubcap. A tiny bit of insignia is so much cheaper and easier to tend than that big ol’ pile of metal. And the pile of metal can do good work on behalf of someone, or something, who needs it!
