Can I donate my RV to charity?

Here at Donate a Car Canada we evaluate each vehicle on its own merits. Motorhome/RV/boat donations are no different. With winter on its way, you might be preparing your holiday vehicle for storage. This coming spring you may start wondering about upgrading or selling our recreational vehicle. The answer to the question of donation becomes important.

The shortest answer we can offer:

Yes! If your RV is in a condition to be re-sold you can most certainly donate it for your Canadian charity of choice.

No, not if the vehicle is recycle-ready. We do not have any agents in Canada that will support end-of-the-road process for trailers, motorhomes, or boats.

Why would I donate my RV?

Recreational vehicle donation being contingent on re-sale means that it will be sold as-is to the highest bidder. This can happen either through auction, or via other re-sale agents. Because bids can be strong, donation outcomes really climb!

Consider these outcomes for charities across Canada:

The Scott Mission received a whopping $43,828.50 donation thanks to L.C.’s donated Coachman Leprechaun!

$2,737.93 was sent to Habitat for Humanity Okanagan thanks to B.R.’s Holiday Endeavor donation.

B.T. chose the Knowledge Network Corporation for his Majestic Motorhome donation, raising $5,914.30 for the charity!

And just a few years ago (this one bears bringing up even though it didn’t happen this calendar year), the True Patriot Love Foundation received a gift of $26,200.00 thanks to J.W.’s Jayco Motorhome donation!

Here’s why we get a little picky

Why does an RV need to be driveable and in condition to be re-sold? We have auction houses and re-sale agents across Canada that can expose your holiday vehicle to their buyer bases. For a unit that’s ready to get out on the open highway (or water), bids can be a great benefit to your charity!

Why can we not accept it should the RV be ready for recycling? The reason our agents do not support this process is due to the construction of these units. Wood and fiberglass are costly to break down and cannot be recycled on site. Moreover, the lack of saleable metal and mechanical parts means there is little of reclaimable value in them at their end-of-life.

How the “Yes!” works

We do take auction-ready motorhomes/RVs/boats through the spring and summer. Wintertime is a no-go, so the months ahead are when you can start considering this option for next spring. We simply won’t find buyers for these unique units in the off season.

The best time to auction a motorhome is between the months of May and August. Most auction lots are open to the elements. Vehicles are subject to winter weather while trying to find a buyer during winter months, so our agents will always suggest you keep it in storage until spring.

Wait until spring in order to donate that sale-ready holiday vehicle. Your charity of choice will be the one to benefit!

In order to avoid high processing costs and potential losses we will ask that your RV be dropped off at our nearest drop-off location. Not possible? Check with us! Our agents work very hard to ensure rewarding donation experiences. They’re going to do all they can to help you out if a drop off isn’t possible for you.

But what about the free tow you promise?

This is another of the quirky answers to, “Can I donate my RV?” While we do offer free towing for almost all vehicles, some unique vehicles pose unique challenges for our agents and the costs of transport can eat up a  portion of the net proceeds. This affects what we’re able to send your  chosen charity. So, in the case of your holiday vehicle, we do check on the possibility of drop off first.
