A Nissan Altima donation for JDRF Canada raise, $2053.75 at auction in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Thank you Elizabeth!

Diabetes Canada received a $698.27 Nissan Versa donation in Kemptville, Ontario thanks to Chris!

A little Leaf’s auction proceeds went to the donor’s charity of choice — for a whopping $5895.75.

Krystin’s Nissan Sentra raised $926.75 for Ronald McDonald House Children’s Charities, South Central Ontario!

A recycle-ready Rogue was donated for the BC SPCA on Vancouver Island. And last, but not least, a scrap Xterra raised solid funds for STARS Foundation.

Alzheimer’s Disease and the Alzheimer’s Society

“More than 600,000 Canadians are living with dementia today, a number projected to double in less than 10 years. The impact doesn’t stop there, because 1 in 5 Canadians have experience caring for someone with dementia.” The Alzheimer’s Society

Alzheimer’s Disease affects us all. We are working together, across the country, to see breakthroughs in research and care for our loved ones.

The Alzheimer Society of Calgary notes,

As our population ages and (Canadians) are living longer, it’s become increasingly important to have a basic understanding of dementia, how to maintain the health of your brain and reduce your risk for Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias later in life. Currently, the lifetime risk of developing dementia is 1 in 4 for women and 1 in 6 for men.

Resources and support area available to your family if you are facing this issue for the first time. If this is a disease that is impacting your family, reach out to the professionals and groups near you that can come alongside you and your loved ones.

You can help!

Explore your local Alzheimer Society chapter for ways that you can serve in your part of Canada. Join a walk. Give a financial gift. Volunteer. There are many ways to participate!

Since the turn of the calendar in 2016, Donate a Car Canada has worked alongside hundreds of car, truck, van, suv, and motorcycle donors whose heart-cause is Alzheimer’s Disease.

Maclean’s ezine article, “Coronavirus: Where to donate and how to help Canada’s most vulnerable,” offers concise and valuable direction. If you’re looking to donate specifically to needs arising from the pandemic, this article will help!

Many of the charities noted in on their break-out lists are charities that we work to support daily. Note the Canadian Mental Health Association, The Salvation Army, and Food Banks Canada. These are on the short-list for monetary donation. Further, SOS Children’s Villages and Kids Help Phone are high on the list.

Concerned for the personal safety of women and children in violent domestic situations, consider donating. The Canadian Women’s Foundation, Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter, and your own local shelter need you.

Similarly, we have seen how aggressively COVID-19 has impacted our Canadian seniors. The Alzheimer Society in your province needs your giving dollars now.

What is Alzheimer’s Disease?

The mission, role, and vision of the Alzheimer Society are to ease the personal and social consequences of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. They also promote research.

They offer support, information, and education to people with dementia. This extends to the families and caregivers affected, too. Increasing public awareness of dementia, they foster services that respect the dignity of the individual.

Toronto Alzheimer Society blog is full of hope

Frederick Lafleur writes the following in his hope-filled blog post:
“Mrs. Jacobs is 96 years old and lives with dementia. She was brought to One Kenton Place by her loving and doting children after an extensive search of the city’s array of memory care residences.

“Why did you choose One Kenton Place?” I asked her son. 

“You could feel the love and compassion the moment you stepped through these doors,” he replied.

Since One Kenton Place opened its doors in 2014, our primary focus has been on creating an environment rooted in resident-centred care. As we moved through our process of welcoming new residents to our home, we asked ourselves, ‘Are we truly resident-centered?’  Does our perception of quality care mirror the perceptions of our residents and their families? With longer life expectancies, levels of care are changing within the senior living sector, particularly in the areas of memory care. So, how do we really know that we’re truly delivering quality care, and have been successful in accomplishing our resident-centred goals?

“Dad has been moved into a nursing home.” These are familiar words as our senior donors navigate the unsettling life change of relinquishing their car keys. Families lovingly tend the emotional work of managing a loved one’s estate.

Letting go of a vehicle is not easy. Your role in supporting your Mom or Dad with what feels like the loss of independence is a weighty one, too!

Stories of the old jalopy that was used to teach the kids to drive often emerge at the time of donation. Tales of a motorhome that travelled coast to coast are noted. The boats that have given several generations many joyful memories shout reminders of the heart, humor, and love that the independence of a driver’s license and a set of keys can afford. Alzheimer Society Benefits from Car Donations

This Spring and Summer, our Alzheimer Society donor families have had some exciting outcomes. A 2011 Cadillac provided a $14,195.00 gift to Alzheimer Society Toronto. The Ottawa chapter received $9853.36 for an ‘09 Econoline! Moreover, just under $3000.00 was sent to AS in BC for an ‘07 Calibre!
