Look no further for ways to share this Giving Tuesday! Donate a Car Canada processes donations for any Canadian charity! Each one will offer ways that you can help. Just as you. Where you are. Today!

Many of us are not in a position to give financially. No problem! The smallest acts of kindness bring meaningful relief. Your innate Goodness? It matters! Share it in the way that you are best able. A written note, or a pot of soup. An offer of childcare, or pet sitting. A simple, authentic smile.

‘Have your feet under you and feeling some financial freedom? Canadian charities will put your dollars and cents to excellent work. Caring, skilled men, women, and children are manning the wheel at our charities. What they need more than anything? The finances to keep things in motion. Your financial offering can make such a difference.

On the other hand, some charities will accept gifts-in-kind — that lightly used couch, coat, or pair of shoes will help!

Get Intentional

Give where you feel the love! CanadaHelps is a fabulous resource in selecting charities to support.

The cause that has most-helped you or your loved ones may be just the place to start this Giving Tuesday. If vulnerable pets or our remarkable Canadian wildlife tug at your heartstrings, give them a paw (or talon…or fin) up!

In giving creatively, you might even think about the impact your gift has on more than one level. Giving your lightly used household items, or a vehicle, means practical help to the recipient. That kind of giving does more! It reduces waste and is helpful environmentally. It clears your own space (possibly aiding in your own wellbeing). The benefits touch into your life, the life (lives) of your recipient, and the broader world.

We’d love to see you this Giving Tuesday! Pick your charity and do up our quick donation form (it takes less than 10 minutes to fill out). Your charity not on our list? No problem! Just let us know and we’ll direct your gift to the cause you love! We’ll have you set up with your free tow and on your way to a tax receipt in short order!

That free tow will be managed efficiently, and with care. Typically, donated vehicles are picked up within 1 – 3 business days. You’ll be called in advance to ensure timing that suits you well.

The gift on top of the gift in all of this? Just as there is no cost to you, there is no cost to your charity of choice. We are here to ensure this full process is managed on behalf of yourself and your charity so that you can all keep doing what you need to do!

A big number like $10,000.00 brings big smiles in tough economic times! Canadian charities have been hit hard by the overall impact of job loss, unstable markets, and global uncertainty, so this donor’s generosity of spirit is inspiring.

The ALS Society

What will this donor’s gift go toward? The ALS Society provides advocacy and support to ALS patients. Furthermore, they champion research. Their site notes,

“ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a disease that gradually paralyzes the body, leaving people without the ability to move, talk, swallow and eventually breathe. Eighty per cent of people die within two to five years of being diagnosed with ALS because the disease has no effective treatment or cure. However, ALS research has advanced to a point that many ALS research experts believe effective treatments are now a matter of ‘when’ not ‘if.’ Research discovery is limited only by the amount of funding available to pursue it.”

“ALS Societies across Canada fund raise on a regional basis to provide services and support to people and families living with ALS and to contribute to the funding of the ALS Canada Research Program. The ALS Canada Research Program funds peer-reviewed research grants and fosters collaboration among Canadian researchers. They help to nurture new ideas and build capacity. ALS Societies advocate federally, provincially and locally on behalf of people and families living with ALS. This ensures better government support and access within the healthcare system.”

To put perspective on some of these life altering issues, please allow me to share personal stories about each of the following charities who so deservingly need our support.

ALS Awareness

It’s ALS Awareness month (otherwise known as Lou Gherig’s disease). Several years ago I worked with a gentleman whose wife was diagnosed with ALS. He had to watch the love of his life deteriorate slowly, over a few years. When she passed away, he was a completely broken man. It took a long time for him to recover from his loss. In those moments, it would have been fantastic to have a ray of hope, to have some lifeline to offer her for her agonizing deterioration and for him to not experience that kind of loss for so many years before she was gone.

Empathy, awareness, and organizations that help

Watching a baby who needs to have a shunt surgically implanted in his little body to drain the fluid from his brain and watching him endure multiple surgeries before his first birthday, was probably one of the most challenging things I’ve ever experienced – and he wasn’t even my child. His little life encompassed brain injury due to premature birth, along with cerebral palsy. Caring for this wee one to provide relief for my dear friends certainly brought awareness of the things people go through that sometimes we have no understanding of.

These two charities – Spina Bifida/Hydrocephalus Association of Alberta and Brain Trust Canada – impact lives. They help families of those dealing with the challenges that come with both disease and brain injury. They are deserving of the funds they receive to carry on the work of research and family support.

When awareness touches close to home

The other event taking place this month is near and dear to my heart. It is the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. We all know more than one person in our lives who has experienced the ‘C’ word. The ripple effect on the families is enormous. In my immediate world, it was my son. He was diagnosed at the ripe old age of 10 months. We participated in our first Relay when he was 18 months of age. One thing I was naïve about before our experience in the wide world of cancer, was how much of a difference research really does make. Ten years before he was diagnosed, the survival rate for my son’s type of cancer was about 10%. When he was in treatment, the prognosis had changed to a 96% survival rate. Every dollar counts.

For my boy’s 5th Relay for Life Victory Lap in Edmonton he got to lead the pack!
